A Richmond man will spend more than a year in jail for driving after being declared a habitual offender after receiving formal sentencing during New Kent Circuit Court proceedings on Monday.

Daryl Lynn Wyche, 49, of the 4800 block of Altar Road, was sentenced to five years in jail with four years suspended (one year to serve) after learning his fate. He also received a 12-month sentence with seven months suspended (five months to serve) for failing to appear at an earlier trial. During a July 9, 2018 trial, Wyche was found guilty of his driving offense after an officer pulled him over for driving 91 miles per hour in a 70 miles per hour zone on Interstate in 64. A background check revealed that Wyche did not have a license due to being declared a habitual offender in 1992.

In an unrelated case, a man will serve three months in jail for possession a gun illegally.

Jack Wade Haigler, 52, of the 3100 block of Piney Slope Lane, Providence Forge, received formal sentencing on one count of possession by a gun by a non-violent felon. During a Jan. 14 trial, Haigler admitted to having the weapon after he accidently shot himself with the weapon when reaching for a pack of cigarettes.

Haigler received a five-year sentence with four years, nine months suspended.

In one final case, a charge of possession of a cell phone by a prisoner was dropped against Brian Eugene Moore, 46, of the 200 block of Peach Street, Williamsburg.
