New Kent County’s School Board has announced results of a survey issued to the community in response to a search for a new superintendent of schools.

A total of 513 responses were received, with 65 percent of those being from parents, 24 percent from school employees, three percent from community organizations, .97 percent from students, and 5.85 percent in the “other” category.

A majority of the survey respondents indicated they wanted a person who can blend decisive leadership characteristics with an open, shared decision-making process, a leader who possesses passion and vision to move New Kent schools forward, a good listener who is also a strong communicator, one who understands the importance of effective school discipline, a leader with a doctorate as well as experience as a principal and/or assistant superintendent, and one with experience as a central office administrator.

Preferences from survey responses include that the candidate has experience from Virginia, be a resident of New Kent County, and has experience teaching at multiple levels, particularly at the high school level.

Of the 45 inquiries received, 39 were full applications. Of those received, 15 had experience as central office administrators, 12 as assistant superintendents, nine as current or former superintendents, two as principals, and one as other. Thirty men applied and nine women applied for the position. Out of the 39 candidates, 28 were from the state of Virginia while 11 were out-of-state applicants.
