New Kent’s general election sees battle for three seats to board of supervisors
Three of five seats on New Kent’s Board of Supervisors will consist of contested races during the upcoming 2019 General Election for the county.
C. Tommy Tiller will be challenged by Kate Ferris for the District 2 seat to the county’s board of supervisors. In District 3, incumbent Patricia Paige will face opposition as Joe Dombroski has submitted paperwork to the seat of county leaders. In District 5, two newcomers will vie for the seat that will be vacated by Ray Davis. Rodell Coffman and John Lockwood will both campaign to represent that district in the upcoming election. Thomas Evelyn of District 1 and Ron Stiers of District 4 are both running for re-election to their chairs and are not opposed as of this time.
In another premiere race on the ballot, two prominent local lawyers will vie for the position of Commonwealth’s Attorney of New Kent. J. Todd Duval and T. Scott Renick have both submitted paperwork for the position as current New Kent Commonwealth’s Attorney C. Linwood Gregory will be retiring at the end of the year.
Another position up for grabs due to a retirement is the position of treasurer in New Kent. Charles Evelyn and Larry Clark are both vying for the spot that will see Norma Holmes leave after more than 40 years of service to the county.
A three-person race for two spots to the Soil and Water Conservation Director Colonial District will also be on the November ballot. Stanislaw Grzeda, Edward Davis, and Philip Thomson will be seeking votes to fill the slots.
In the race for positions on New Kent’s School Board, two districts will see contested races. In District 1, incumbent Adriane Marshall will be challenged by William “Wayne” Meade for the seat, while in District 4, Sarah Grier-Barber will face competition from Paul Ross. Current school board members Kristin Swynford (District 2), Andrea Staskiel (District 3), and Gail Hardinge (District 5) are all seeking re-election and currently running unopposed.
In a battle for a seat in the Virginia Senate, current representative Tommy Norment will be challenged by former New Kent treasurer Herb Jones.
The seat to represent to New Kent in Virginia’s House of Delegates has been one of the most talked about positions in the county, especially with the Republican party. Scott Wyatt and Chris Peace have been in a back-and-forth battle of who is the rightful representative of the Republican Party for the 97th District. A May convention of the 97th District was held by the committee chairman Thomas Miller was held despite the committee cancelling the convention. The committee elected to move forward with the canvass vote, with Wyatt appealing that decision. During the disputed canvass vote, Peace was declared the victor. However, Wyatt’s appeal was rejected in early June and more debate on who was the legal representative for the party continues even up to the printing of this story.
According to the candidacy form, as of June 14, Wyatt is listed as the Republican representative to the House of Delegates. Peace’s name does appear on the list as well as an Independent party with his status identified as “In Progress.” Democrat Kevin Washington is also running for the 97th District seat.
Finally, other races that are currently running unopposed are J. Joe McLaughlin Jr. for New Kent County Sheriff, and Laura Ecimovic for re-election as the Commissioner of the Revenue.
