Richmond man pleads guilty to drug possession in New Kent

A Richmond man entered guilty pleas to drug related charges during Monday morning proceedings in New Kent Circuit Court.

Steven Dashawn Boyd, 38, of the 500 block of North Adams Street, Richmond, entered guilty pleas to one count of possession of a controlled substance and an amended charge of misdemeanor possession of marijuana (originally distribution of marijuana). One charge of misdemeanor violation of pretrial bail was dropped.

In a summary of evidence, on Mar. 8 a 2001 Acura being driven suspiciously, resulting in authorities being notified. The vehicle was pulled over and the officer detected a strong odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle. Boyd, now identified as the driver, admitted that he had marijuana in the vehicle, with a subsequent search resulting in a bag with white substance found in the vehicle. The defendant was arrested, and lab results determined that the powder inside the bag was cocaine.

Under the plea agreement, Boyd will enter into the first offender program. The defendant will enroll into rehabilitation programs and also have to complete hours of community service.
