Lanexa man charged with murder of New Kent businessman

Michael Anthony Jenkins has been charged with second-degree murder along with several other felonies.

A Lanexa man has been charged with second degree murder after the discovery of a New Kent’s businessman’s body on Dec. 4.

Michael Anthony Jenkins, 38, of the 15000 block of Pocahontas Trail, has been charged with one count of second degree murder, one count of grand larceny of property, and two counts each of grand larceny of a firearm, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and petty larceny (third offense within 10 years).

According to a press release from New Kent’s Sheriff’s Office, a call was received shortly before 2 p.m. of an individual down inside the residence. First responders arrived at the scene and located a male down inside the address. Medical aid was provided however the victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

The victim was identified as Elmer Lee Stewart, a well-known and well-respected life-long resident and businessman of New Kent County. He was 65 at the time of his death.

Around 9:30 p.m. that night, contact was made with a suspect in this case at his residence. Jenkins was taken into custody without incident. He was transported to Henrico Jail East where he is currently being held without bond.
