Petersburg man dies in Charles City crash on New Year’s Day

A Petersburg man is dead as the result of a crash on New Year’s Day in Charles City.

Tramayne Lavarus Wyatt, 35, of the 2000 block of S. Crater Road, succumbed to his injuries and died at the scene of the accident.

According to a report released by the Virginia State Police, at approximately 4:20 a.m. on Jan. 1, troopers responded to a single crash on John Tyler Memorial Highway (Route 5) just west of Kimages Road (Route 658). A preliminary investigation reveals that a 1997 Chevrolet Tahoe driven by Wyatt was traveling westbound on Route 5 when the vehicle ran off the road to the left and struck a tree.

Wyatt, identified as the driver, was not wearing a seat belt at the time. An 18-year old male passenger was wearing a seat belt and sustained minor injuries. He was not transported to a nearby medical facility.

Alcohol is being considered as one of the causal factors in the crash. The accident remains under investigation.
