A Quinton man who threatened officers with a shotgun after a heated argument on Mar. 3, 2019, will spend a year in jail.

Eric Tremaine Williams Sr., 47, of the 1400 block of Quaker Road, received his sentence during Monday afternoon proceedings in New Kent Circuit Court.

During a Dec. 17, 2019 contested trial, New Kent deputies testified how they responded to Williams residence to serve a warrant on Eric Williams Jr. After Williams Jr. and Donna Williams (Williams Sr.’s wife) started arguing with officers, Williams Sr. emerged on the porch. One of the deputies testified they saw Williams Sr. with a shotgun in his hand and heard it being cocked, forcing deputies to seek shelter.

During his trial, Williams Sr. testified that one of his statements was misconstrued and officers thought he was threatening them. During his sentencing, Williams Sr. apologized for his actions and admitted he should have handled the situation better.

Williams Sr. received a three-year sentence on each of the two assault on a law enforcement officer charges, with all but six months suspended on each charge. The six months imposed on each charge are mandatory minimum time to serve. All 12 months on the misdemeanor obstruction of justice charge were suspended.
