Suspect in Bottoms Bridge larceny receives three month jail term

A Richmond man involved with a larceny at a convenience store in Bottoms Bridge on March 25 will serve three months in jail.

Jermaile Aubrey Hicks, 34, of the 3300 block of Bunch Place, entered a guilty to plea to one count of grand larceny as part of a plea deal reached Monday afternoon in New Kent Circuit Court. One count of petty larceny (third or subsequent offense) was dropped as part of the agreement.

In a summary of evidence, Hicks and two other males entered FasMart and stole items that included cigarettes and lottery tickets. When surveillance film was reviewed by the owner along with authorities, the owner commented that he knew who one of the suspects was. When officers made contact with the suspect, he said that Hicks was the one who stole the items. Hicks was later tracked down and arrested for the crimes.

Under the plea agreement, Hicks received a five-year sentence with four years, nine months suspended. He must also pay restitution in the amount of $692.20.

In other circuit court proceedings:

–Jonathan Earl Anderson, 33, of the 2700 block of General Boulevard, Richmond pled guilty to an amended charge of possession of a Schedule III substance (originally possession of a Schedule I/II substance).

In a summary of evidence, on July 6, 2019, a New Kent deputy conducted a traffic stop on Pocahontas Trail (Route 60) after noting a dark SUV crossing back and forth over the shoulder of the road. After identifying Anderson as the driver and realizing that his license was suspended, he asked for consent to search the vehicle. Anderson and his passengers exited the vehicle and a search of the vehicle discovered a white powdery substance inside a cigarette pack. When questioned about the substance, the defendant denied that it did not belong to him.

Under the agreement, Anderson received a 12-month sentence with 10 months suspended (two to serve). He must also pay a fine of $500.

–Sonja Noella Beaulieu, 41, of Virginia Beach, entered a guilty plea to a lone count of DUI after being convicted of a similar offense.

In a summary of evidence, on Nov. 25, 2019, a New Kent deputy encountered a vehicle sitting in Lanexa Plaza after hours. The vehicle was running, and the defendant was in the driver’s seat. The officer approached the driver, now identified as Beaulieu, and detected a strong odor of alcohol. When questioned, the defendant admitted to having two beers earlier. A field sobriety test was conducted, with Beaulieu failing the test and being arrested. A subsequent blood test revealed the defendant’s BAC (blood-alcohol content) to be .23, nearly three times the legal limit. Additional investigative work discovered Beaulieu had a felony DUI conviction from 2007 in Virginia Beach.

A presentence report is being prepared with formal sentencing for Beaulieu scheduled on Sept. 14.

–Matthew Travis Burns, 31, of the 8200 block of New Kent Highway, New Kent, pled guilty to one count of petty larceny (third or subsequent offense) as part of an agreement. Two additional counts of petty larceny (third or subsequent offense) and one count of felony violation of pretrial were dropped.

In a summary of evidence, on Nov. 29, 2019, a deputy was investigating an unrelated incident when he came across Burns to question it about it. After hearing inconsistencies in the story that the defendant was telling, the officer conducted a search of his vehicle and discovered a bottle with medication in it. The medication had the name of the victim on the bottle and Burns was taken into custody.

Under the agreement, Burns received a five-year jail sentence with all but two months suspended. He must also pay $21 in restitution, the cost of the medication that was taken.

–Sarah Ann Hunkele, 32, of the 6300 block of Old Union Road, Charles City, entered guilty pleas to two counts of possession of a controlled substance (heroin, cocaine).

In a summary of evidence, on June 27, 2019, a New Kent deputy was on routine patrol at 1:30 a.m. when he noticed a vehicle parked in the Toe Ink Wayside during hours when the private property is closed. Wen the officer approached the driver, he knocked on the window to wake her up. The driver, now identified as Hunkele, had a clear straw and a bag with white powder sitting on an adjacent seat. When asked to step out of the car, the officer discovered that Hunkele was holding a brown bag with a smaller green bag inside of it. The green bag contained another powdery substance. A lab test revealed that the defendant was in possession of both cocaine and heroin.

No formal finding was rendered as the defendant will enter the First Offender Program. If she is successful, both charges will be dismissed.

–Jody Diquana James, 31, of the 600 block of Harding Street, Petersburg, pled guilty to a single county of DUI (third offense within five years) as part of a plea agreement. One charge of misdemeanor speeding was dropped.

In a summary of evidence, on Aug. 15, 2019, a Virginia State Trooper traveling on Interstate 64 encountered a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed. After conducting a traffic stop, the officer detected an odor of alcohol. When looking at the driver, now identified as James, he saw bloodshot eyes and heard slurred speech. The defendant refused to take a breathalyzer test and she was arrested on suspicion of driving while intoxicated. A blood test revealed that James’ BAC level to be .08, and a further investigation discovered that she had committed similar offenses in Chesterfield and Charles City within the last five years.

Under the agreement, James received a five-year jail sentence with four years suspended (one year to serve). She must also pay a fine of $1,000 and contribute $50 to the Trauma Center Fund.

–Robert Anthony Rosea, 58, of Cumberland, entered a guilty plea to a single count of construction fraud.

In a summary of evidence, on Aug. 31, 2019, Rosea had entered into an agreement wit the victim for repairs to a home. After receiving a payment of $2,928 to begin the work, the defendant did not purchase materials or follow through on the agreement. The victim went to authorities on Oct. 22, 2019 to report the crime and Rosea was taken into custody.

Formal sentencing for Rosea is schedule to take place on Sept. 14.

–Rebecca Sue Williams, 35, of the 6300 block of Hickory Road, Quinton, on amended charges of misdemeanor petty larceny (originally felony pickpocketing) and misdemeanor possession of a Schedule III substance (originally possession of a Schedule I/II substance).

In a summary of evidence, on June 19, 2019, Williams was in New Kent visiting the victim. Inside of the victim’s home, the defendant went to the medicine cabinet and stole a bottle of pills. When she went to her vehicle and was confronted by officers shortly afterwards, Williams said that she thought the bottle was Tylenol. However, it was discovered the bottle originally held hydrocodone pills, and that the current medicine inside the bottle was a mixture of various medicine.

Under the agreement, all 12 months on each misdemeanor charge were suspended.
