Redistricting plan for New Kent County heads to December public hearing

New Kent County Board of Supervisors have selected an option for a redistricting plan that will head to public hearing in December.

With a population clocking in just over 23,000 according to the 2020 census, county leaders considered recommendations regarding redistricting at its October 2021 meeting. From there, County Administrator Rodney Hathaway recommended a proposal at Tuesday morning’s work session.

The proposal recommended by the county administrator include District 3 losing residents on Farmer’s Drive and most of Polish Town Road (to District 5), most of the area to the southeast of Interstate 64 (with Mt. Pleasant Road serving as the boundary) belonging to District 5, Ed Allen’s Campground and a mobile home park in the area going to District 4 (while Rockahock remains in District 5), the west side of Cumberland to become part of District 1, District 3’s boundary expanding to Old Roxbury Road, and District 2 taking over Peace Road and adding Wood Edge’s subdivision. Hathaway followed that up by saying his recommendations were a combination of early feedback from citizens along with following a list of 12 set criteria to help in the process.

County leaders approved by consensus to send place the subject as part of its December monthly meeting. By law, a plan must be adopted and submitted to the Attorney General’s office prior to the end of the year.
