Richmond man’s 112 miles-per-hour escape attempt results in guilty conviction in New Kent
A Richmond man who tried to flee from a New Kent deputy on a motorcycle has pleaded guilty to a single count of felony eluding of policy.
Stuart Connar Jones Jr.,34, of the 1400 block of N. 20th Street, entered the plea as part of an agreement reached during Monday morning proceedings in New Kent Circuit Court.
In a summary of evidence, on Aug. 23, 2021 shortly before midnight, a New Kent deputy was patrolling Interstate 64 westbound near the 214-mile marker when a motorcycle entered his radar at 112 miles per hour in a posted 70 miles per hour zone. The officer took off and caught up to the vehicle approximately five miles later, signaling for the bike to pull over. Instead, the motorcycle accelerated from the officer at a high rate of speed and a chase ensued.
The motorcycle operator navigated into Henrico County, taking exit 200 to head onto Interstate 295 northbound. When the bike attempted to leave Interstate 295 at exit 34A, he crashed the motorcycle. The operator, identified as Jones, was taken into custody.
As part of the plea agreement, a presentence report is being prepared with sentencing guidelines recommending a range of one day to six months to serve. The prosecutors, however, will not ask for anything above a five-month period of active incarceration. Formal sentencing is scheduled for Apr. 18.
In an unrelated matter, one amended charge of petty larceny (originally grand larceny) lodged against Brandon Tyler Duff, 24, of the 700 block of Lilly Pond Road, King & Queen, and Felix John Gill, 46, of the 1200 block of Grapevine Road, Sandston, were dropped due to the possibility of an unreliable witness.
