Juvenile arrested for bringing firearm to New Kent High School

A New Kent juvenile has been arrested after he allegedly brought a firearm to New Kent High School.

In a Mar. 9 press release from New Kent Sheriff’s Office, at approximately 9 p.m. on Mar. 8, law enforcement received information concerning a student having a firearm in their possession during the school day while at New Kent High School. Members of the sheriff’s office interviewed several individuals throughout the night during the course of the investigation.

New Kent Public School administration was alerted to the situation and continued contact throughout the on-going joint investigation. In cooperation with school administration and high school staff, the sheriff’s office maintained an increase presence as the high school during the arrival of students and until the suspect was contacted by the sheriff’s office.

A 16-year-old male juvenile was identified as a suspect and was contacted at 6:30 a.m. today (Mar. 9). After the interview, the firearm was recovered and the juvenile was taken into custody.

The juvenile has been transported to the Merrimac Juvenile Detention Center. He is charged with possession of a firearm on school property, possession of a firearm by an individual under the age of 18, brandishing a firearm, and removing/altering a serial number on a firearm.

No further information about the incident or the identity of the juvenile will be released.
