Incumbent Laura Ecimovic (left) defeated challenger Terry Cornelius (right) to retain her spot in the November General Election to the position of New Kent Commissioner of Revenue.

A battle for the Republican nomination for the seat of New Kent County Commissioner of Revenue highlights the June 20, 2023 primary races in our area.

Incumbent Laura Ecimovic is being challenged by newcomer Terry Cornelius for the right to be placed on November’s General Election ballot.

“New Kent has grown over 45 percent in the last 16 years, making us the fastest growing locality in Virginia,” said Ecimovic in a press release. “It’s no secret that New Kent is a great place to live, raise a family, start a business, and to be part of a vibrant community.

“I am committed to promote programs to minimize our tax burden and meet the demands created by growth,” Ecimovic’s statement continues. “I will continue to develop services and procedures and implement solutions to benefit all New Kent citizens.

For Cornelius, according to his press release, he says it is time for a change in the position and that he is the candidate that can do it.

“I will use the best valuation sources to benefit New Kent citizens,” he said. “I will serve as a good advisor to the county Board of Supervisors, helping develop methods to reduce the tax burdens on citizens.

“I will ease the appeal process by reviewing your assessment and correcting inaccurate or outdated information, without you having to feel as though you’re fighting the university,” Cornelius statements continue. “I will be accessible, demonstrate honesty, integrity, and transparency. The assessment methods and formulas used will be readily available for your review, and the valuation sources that best benefit you as a citizen will be used.”

In Charles City, two primary elections will take place among democratic candidates for seats to both the Virginia House of Delegates and the Virginia Senate.

In the 81st District in the House of Delegates Incumbent Delores McQuinn is being challenged by newcomer Terrence Walker. In the battle for the 13th District Seat in the Virginia Senate, Incumbent Joe Morrissey is facing competition from Lashrecse Aird.

Winners of the June 20 election will be placed on the General Election ballot this upcoming November.
