New Kent County Public Schools excel on SOLs; Charles City County Public Schools improve in 10 subjects
New Kent County Public Schools continue to excel when it comes to meeting the requirements of the Virginia Standards of Learning tests.
New Kent posted a 75 percent or better pass rate in 22 categories as recorded in results released by the Virginia Department of Education.
Passing rates eclipsed the 90th percentile in End of Course Reading (92), Algebra I (91), and Algebra II (92). Eighty percent of New Kent students passed in the areas of Grade 7 English Reading, Grade 8 English Reading, End of Course Writing, Civics and Economics, World History I, Grade 3 Mathematics, Grade 4 Mathematics, Grade 5 Mathematics, Grade 8 Mathematics, Geometry, and Biology. Making the mark with a 70 percent pass rate or better include the areas of Grade 3 English Reading, Grade 4 English Reading, Grade 5 Reading, Grade 6 English Reading, Virginia Studies, Grade 6 Mathematics, Grade 7 Mathematics, Grade 5 Science, and Grade 8 Science.
The biggest subject gains for New Kent from last year were in the areas of Grade 8 Science (65 to 77 percent), End of Course Writing (81 to 88 percent), Grade 3 Mathematics (79 to 86 percent), and Grade 6 Mathematics (71 to 79 percent).
New Kent had two significant drops in two content areas, both in the history and social sciences subject matters. Geography saw its passing rate fall from 88 to 64 percent, while Virginia and U.S. History fell from 52 to 28 percent. The only other subject matter of Earth Science (which was not taken last year according to the SOL results) had a 50 percent pass rate.
For Charles City County Public Schools, they are continuing to make improvements at a slow but steady rate.
Drastic gains were seen in the subject content areas of Grade 3 reading (24 to 46 percent), Grade 7 reading (41 to 66 percent), Grade 5 mathematics (27 to 44 percent), Grade 6 mathematics (30 to 45 percent), and Algebra I (46 to 63 percent).
Charles City’s top passing rate areas were End of Course Reading (75 percent), Grade 7 reading, Civics and Economics (64 percent), and Algebra I. County schools only significant drop came in Grade 4 reading (54 to 39 percent). Overall, Charles City County Public Schools improved in 10 subjects areas.
