Pagano resigns from New Kent School Board
Keith Pagano has stepped down from his position as the District 1 representative and board chairman for the New Kent County School Board.
The announcement came during an Apr. 7 special meeting of the school board. After District 4 representative Ron Vaught was elected as the new chairman, he made a statement that Pagano, who was in attendance, resigned due to a change in residency. By law, in order to be a representative of a district, the person must live in the district.
New Kent Superintendent of Schools Brian Nichols indicated to the board that they will need to appoint a temporary replacement for Pagano’s position to serve until November. A special election will now take place in November for residents of District 1 to elect a new school board representative.
Nichols commented about Pagano’s resignation and thanked him for his service to New Kent County Public Schools.
“We’re losing a strong sense of governance and someone who cares for the schools,” the superintendent said. “He’s a great supporter.
“Supporting doesn’t mean agreement,” Nichols continued. “He pushed me as a leader and gave me an opportunity to grow. Board leadership matters just like teachers matter.”
New Kent School Board will release information regarding the appointing of an interim District 1 representative. The decision is expected to be made within the month, with a special public hearing on the issue taking place on Apr. 14.
