Newport News man pleads guilty to eluding police in New Kent County

A Newport News man has entered guilty pleas stemming from a high-speed pursuit in New Kent County.

Devon Alexander Sabb, 32, of the 400 block of Cox Landing, pled guilty to one count each of felony eluding, misdemeanor reckless driving, and misdemeanor driving suspended as part of a plea agreement reached Monday afternoon n New Kent Circuit Court.

In a summary of evidence provided by New Kent Commonwealth’s Attorney Scott Renick, on Nov. 5, 2024, a Virginia State Trooper clocked a vehicle traveling over the posted speed limit on Interstate 64. The trooper attempted to conduct a traffic stop, but the vehicle accelerated. The chase reached speeds of 104 miles per hour and lasted six miles before the suspect, later identified as Sabb, pulled over and was taken into custody.

Under the plea agreement, a presentence report is being prepared on the defendant. Formal sentencing is scheduled for Nov. 23.

In other circuit court matters:

–Marcus Alexander Strickland, 29, of the 8800 block of Greenwood Boulevard, New Kent, had one charge of felony child abuse dismissed after successfully completing required supervision programs.

–William Cody West, 33, of the 6800 block of Cherokee Lane, New Kent, had a single charge of possession of a Schedule I/II substance dropped.
