Charles City schools announce makeup dates

Due to recent inclement weather, Charles City’s School Board elected to add two regular school days for students in order to recoup additional hours of instruction. Schools will now be in session on Jan. 27 and Mar. 9 as makeup days for students. The January date was originally scheduled to be a teacher workday, while the March date was scheduled for parent-teacher conferences. Superintendent of schools David Gaston said that while the school had enough hours not to make-up days, his experience in Charles City indicated the possibility of more inclement weather may be on the way. Roundabout dilemma forces second New Kent supervisor to speak out

While those words are key lyrics in a popular song, they can also be used to describe the ongoing construction to create a roundabout at the intersection of Route 249 (New Kent Highway) and Airport/Tunstall Road in the Quinton area of New Kent. The project, which had an original completion date of December 2015, has frustrated District 1 representative Thomas Evelyn to the point where he verbally expressed dismay at multiple board meetings. Renderings made in Charles City Circuit Court cases

Renderings were handed down in two cases during Tuesday morning proceedings in Charles City Circuit Court: –Jason McCoy Bell, 22, of the 4900 block of Shop Street, Richmond, received formal sentencing to a reduced charge of misdemeanor petty larceny (originally grand larceny). In April 2014, Bell entered a plea agreement where he admitted to stealing a firearm and selling it to a pawn shop. Under that plea agreement, if he made substantial payments towards restitution, the charge would be reduced to a misdemeanor. The defendant had his charge reduced but must continue to make payments towards restitution. Bell also received…

Two men indicted in Charles City Circuit Court

Two men were formally indicted by a grand jury during Tuesday morning proceedings in Charles City Circuit Court: –Dallis Leno Wallace Jr., 48, of the 7800 block of Lewis Tyler Lane, Charles City, on one count of construction fraud. Wallace allegedly received $9,500 to do repair work on a home on Wayside Road around Dec. 25, 2015 but did not perform the task. –Jared Edward Woodley, 23, of the 7400 block of Courthouse Road, Providence Forge, on one count of malicious wounding. Woodley allegedly stabbed another man during an altercation on July 7.

Charles City Courthouse to be named in honor of first African-American woman circuit court clerk

At the regular November meeting of Charles City’s Board of Supervisors, family and relatives of the late Iona W. Adkins submitted a letter requesting the naming of Charles City Courthouse after her. At the December meeting, county leaders voted unanimously to honor the family’s wishes. County leaders agreed to name the building after Adkins at the Dec. 27 meeting. She was elected to the position of Circuit Court Clerk of Charles City in 1967, becoming the first African-American woman in the United States to be elected to the position since the Reconstruction Period of the country. Single car crash claims life of Providence Forge man in Charles City

A Providence Forge man has died as the result of a single vehicle crash Saturday night (Dec. 17) in Charles City. Kennedy O. Greene, 21, died at the scene of an accident on Route 155 (Courthouse Road) near the intersection of Green Oak Road. According to Sgt. Steve Vick of the Virginia State Police, shortly after 9 p.m., a 2008 Acura TL was traveling northbound on Route 155 when it ran off the left side of the road and struck a tree. Burglarizing former Charles City workplace nets man three-year prison term

A man who burglarized his former place of employment and eluded police while out on bond will spend the next three years in prison. Treveon Dolen Clemons, 27, of the 4500 block of Marlin Avenue, Suffolk, accepted a plea agreement and entered guilty pleas to one count each of burglary, grand theft auto, felony failure to appear, and misdemeanor driving suspended (third or subsequent offense) during Dec. 16 proceedings in Charles City Circuit Court. Broadband town hall provides answers, hope in Charles City

For two years, Charles City residents have been promised high-speed internet in the county. And while only a few businesses have begun to connect through wired underground cables, residents have continuously questioned about the availability and ongoing delays of the service. A town hall Wednesday night with county leaders, citizens, and SCS Broadband looked to shed some light on the issue. New Kent subdivision ordinance amendment squeaks by with 3-2 favorable vote

New Kent supervisors took nearly an hour in mulling over a recommendation to amend the classification of minor and major subdivisions and increase the minimum growth area for open space or cluster subdivisions. In the end, a 3-2 favorable vote squeaked by on the new amendments. County leaders gathered Monday night for a public hearing on changing the county’s subdivision ordinance. Three individuals entered into plea agreements as part of proceedings held Monday in New Kent Circuit Court: –Adolphus Wallace, 58, of the 11000 block of Canora Lane, Providence Forge, entered a guilty plea to one count of credit card theft. One count of misdemeanor credit card fraud was dropped as part of the plea deal. In a summary of evidence, Ricky Lee Testerman left his debit card by accident on the counter of a local hardware store on July 5. He later returned and discovered it was missing.
