Charles City Board of Supervisors announced the hiring of Rachel Chieppa as the new Director of Planning for the county after the departure of Matt Rowe for Pittsylvania County. After two postponements due to inclement weather, Virginia’s Department of Transportation (VDOT) has announced closing dates to make repairs on two bridges in Charles City. Starting at 8 p.m. on Jan. 29, the Benjamin Harrison Bridge connecting Charles City and Prince George will be closed to replace a gate that was damaged in a December accident. The bridge will remained closed until Jan. 30, 5:30 a.m. and will be followed by alternating lane closures until repairs are completed. The Herring Creek Bridge on Route 5 (John Tyler Memorial Highway) is tentatively scheduled to close on Monday, Feb. 1, 9 a.m….

Snowstorm Jonas that hit the east coast on Jan. 22-23 has accounted for a death in Charles City. Charles City Sheriff’s Office confirmed the death of a man on Jan. 23. A medical examiner said the man suffered from hypothermia as a result of the conditions. The name of the victim is being withheld upon notification of kin.

With more than six inches of snow falling and a combination mixture of sleet and snow in the forecast for Saturday, Virginia State Police continue to urge motorists to stay off the road as VDOT continues to work around the clock. According to Sgt. Stephan Vick of the Virginia State Police, more than 300 crashes and 251 calls for disabled vehicles in central Virginia. Approximately 30 of those accidents have been reported from New Kent, Charles City, King William, and King & Queen Counties.
A Virginia State Trooper was hit in New Kent while assisting a disabled vehicle on Interstate 64. According to a press release, around 7:30 p.m., Trooper M.D. Jester was helping a stranded motorist at mile marker 212 near the Talleysville exit when a car ran in the back of his police cruiser. Jester was taken to a nearby medical facility and treated for minor injuries.
