Benjamin Harrison Bridge to close this weekend for repairs

The Benjamin Harrison Bridge connecting Charles City and Prince George County will close for repairs this weekend during overnight hours. The bridge will close beginning at 8 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 15 and reopen on Saturday, Jan. 16, 5:30 a.m. to repair the bridge’s stop gate that was damaged in an accident last December. Also on Jan. 16, there will be alternating lane closures from 5:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m. Drivers are advised to use Route 5 West to Interstate 295 South to exit 13A to return back to Route 10 East as an alternative route. Providence Forge man killed walking along Interstate 95

A Providence Forge man was killed in northern Virginia as he walked along Interstate 95 Monday night. According to a Virginia State Police report, Jeremy D. Collins, 36, died in Springfield after he was hit by a car traveling southbound on Interstate 95. The report indicates a 2012 Toyota Corolla was traveling in the left lane when it approached a pedestrian wearing dark clothing and walking in the travel lane. The car attempted to avoid the collision but was unable to change lanes, striking Collins. Collins, who had no identification on his person at the time, died at the scene…

Alleged stabbing leads to indictment of Charles City man

A Charles City man who allegedly attacked his stepdaughter’s boyfriend has been indicted by a Charles City Circuit Court grand jury. Todd Alfonzo Tabb, 52, of the 8900 block of Old Elam Cemetery Road, received an indictment on one count of malicious wounding. According to the indictment, Tabb allegedly stabbed Marcus Tyler during an Aug. 23, 2015 confrontation that escalated from a conversation. Tabb is currently being held without bond and is scheduled for a March 15 jury trial. Two accept plea deals in New Kent Circuit Court

A New Kent man will spend three months in jail after accepting a plea agreement during Monday morning New Kent Circuit Court proceedings. Zakary Egan Perkins, 19, entered a guilty plea to an amended charge of misdemeanor contributing to the delinquency of a minor (originally misdemeanor sexual battery). One charge of carnal knowledge was dropped. In a summary of evidence provided by special prosecutor Clay Blanton, on May 16, 2015, a private party was held at Burks Farm in Providence Forge. Pothole patching rings in year on Interstate 64 in New Kent

Virginia’s Department of Transportation (VDOT) has announced a pavement repairing project next week in New Kent. On Jan. 7, Interstate 64 eastbound between mile markers 205 (Bottoms Bridge) and 224 will have alternating lane closures from 9 p.m.-1 a.m. for pothole patching.

Williamsburg man killed in early morning crash in New Kent

A Williamsburg man was killed during an early Dec. 30 morning accident in New Kent. Charles E.S. Garrett, 27, died at the scene after the crash on Interstate 64 eastbound near mile marker 214 (Providence Forge). According to the Virginia State Police report, around 5:19 a.m., a 2006 Honda Civic was traveling east on the Interstate 64 at a high rate of speed when it switched lanes from the right to the left lane. NKSO seeks information on break-in at Patsy’s Diner

New Kent Sheriff’s Office is seeking information on a recent burglary in Providence Forge. On Dec. 21, a burglary occurred in the early morning hours at Patsy’s Diner. Forced entry was made inside the building. The sheriff’s office is asking for information involving the break-in. Plea deal reached in motorcycle felony eluding case in New Kent

A Richmond man who fled police in a multi-county chase accepted a plea deal during Dec. 21 New Kent Circuit Court proceedings. Nicholas Joseph Ciambor, 30, of the 5800 block of Westover Village Drive, entered Alford pleas of guilty to one count each of felony eluding police, misdemeanor driving without a proper designation, and misdemeanor reckless driving. While Ciambor maintains his innocence with his plea, evidence presented would convict him of the crime. With a prediction of a $345,000 reduction in state funding due to the local composite index (see related story on website), Charles City superintendent of schools David Gaston is hoping county supervisors will provide funds to compensate that deficit as well as provide additional money to help sustain adequate educational services to students.
