‘Les Miserables’ performance to highlight 10th anniversary of New Kent High School, England’s Astor College collaboration
In 2005, a project to produce high quality, Broadway-style shows began as a partnership between New Kent High School and Astor College in England. Ten years later, that partnership is still going strong and will feature an anniversary celebration and performances of Victor Hugo’s “Les Miserables” starting next October. The partnership is a collaborative effort to develop musicals featuring students from both schools in performing as well as behind-the-scenes capacities. The joint effort has proven worthwhile, as a number of New Kent students have received opportunity to travel to England for performances. The schools staged “Jesus Christ Superstar” to launch…

Fatal accident on Interstate 64 west at West Point exit
A Newport News man is dead as the result of an accident on Interstate 64 westbound on Friday morning. Paul R. Clewis, 62, died at the scene of the accident after a 15-seat passenger bus he was driving ran off the right side of the road and struck a tree shortly after 9 a.m. on the 220 exit ramp (Route 33/West Point) westbound on Interstate 64. He was the only occupant on the bus. The exit ramp was closed for several hours, but reopened at 1:25 p.m. The result of the accident also triggered a subsequent crash involving a van…

Kindergarten registration is April 16
One of the biggest milestones in a child’s journey is starting school and being ready to succeed. On Thursday, April 16, Smart Beginnings Greater Richmond will hold its fifth annual Regional Kindergarten Campaign. NKSO offers tips to prevent credit/debit card larceny, fraud
New Kent Sheriff’s Office is encouraging citizens to maintain the security of credit/debit card numbers and information due to an increase of credit/debit card larcenies and frauds throughout the nation. The following tips are encouraged by the department: -Visually inspect any card reader that you plan to use prior to inserting your credit/debit card to determine if a skimmer device may be in place on that machine. Computer use leads to new trouble for New Kent man who threatened school violence as a youth
As a 14-year-old eighth grader at New Kent Middle School, Thomas Moody Garner ran afoul of the law via computer. In April 2007, just a few days after the massacre at Virginia Tech, he sent a message to another student threatening violence at NKMS that would exceed the tragedy at Tech. In juvenile court, he pleaded no contest to one count of making a terrorist threat by electronic means and spent the next four years in and out of juvenile custody before being released on April 11, 2011. New Kent man incurs drug charges while being booked for DUI
A New Kent County man, transported to Henrico Jail East for allegedly driving under the influence, landed in more trouble when officers conducting the booking process inside the jail spotted drugs allegedly discarded by the suspect. Now in addition to the DUI charges, Christopher Milton Golderos, 37, of the 12000 block of Old Telegraph Road, Providence Forge, faces one felony count each of heroin possession and transporting narcotics into a correctional facility. The incidents occurred on March 7. The suspect was being held without bond and was due to appear in court on March 10.
Lanes reopen on Interstate 64 eastbound after accident claims life of woman motorist; driver charged with reckless driving
A Richmond woman is dead after an March 11 morning accident on Interstate 64 eastbound near the Talleysville exit (mile marker 211). Virginia State Police responded shortly after 9:30 a.m. when five vehicles including two tractor-trailers became involved in the accident, blocking all eastbound lanes. Just before 12 p.m., Virginia State Police confirmed Jennifer P. Wilson, 43, was killed and died at the scene. State police say that at the time of the accident, traffic was slowing down due to a disabled vehicle. Accident on Interstate 64 claims life of Richmond man
A Richmond man is dead after his vehicle crashed on Interstate 64 in New Kent. Anthony K. Purter, 46, died at the scene of the crash shortly after 12 p.m. on March 8. According to the police report, a 1999 Mercury Mountaineer was traveling westbound on Interstate 64 when it ran off the right side of the road at the 220 mile marker and struck several trees. Purter was wearing a seatbelt when state police troopers arrived. Speed and alcohol are not considered factors in the crash. The crash remains under investigation.
Charles City man charged with murder in James City County
A Charles City man is in custody at Middle Peninsula Regional Jail after he allegedly was involved in a murder last November. Wilbert McKenley Walker, 22, was arrested last Friday stemming from the death of Tyler Anthony Cole of James City County. According to the police report, Walker allegedly drove two other suspects to Ironbound Square Park. The other two suspects allegedly exited the vehicle and shot into Cole’s vehicle. Cole was fatally wounded and pronounced dead upon arrival at a hospital. Walker is charged with second-degree murder and is currently being held without bond.
Cosby Mill Road in New Kent reopened to vehicle traffic
Cosby Mill Road, an important highway link in New Kent County’s western end, reopened to vehicle traffic early this afternoon (Friday) following completion of a project to replace a series of culverts. The road has been closed to traffic since Nov. 11 to allow for the $300,000 project to take place. The site of the project is where Black Creek flows under the pavement and where the roadway often floods after heavy rain, especially when the culverts become blocked. “The road is now open, but we still have to pave the area,” VDOT representative Chris Baker said today, adding that…
