Charles City landfill recognized for wildlife habitat program
Waste Management’s Charles City County Landfill was honored at the Wildlife Habitat Council’s 26th Annual Symposium for its achievements in protecting and enhancing wildlife habitat. The facility earned recertification of its Wildlife at Work program, which was designed by the Wildlife Habitat Council (WHC) to provide a structure for cooperative efforts between management, employees and community members to create, conserve and restore wildlife habitats The local effort is part of a national Waste Management program that protects animal and plant species on more than 26,000 acres across North America, representing an important contribution to the company’s goal of 100 certifications…

Three arrested for separate thefts in New Kent
Three individuals have been arrested by New Kent Sheriff’s Office as potential suspects in crimes within the county: –Nancy L. Pace, 42, (address unknown) and Christopher Cutrell, 21, of the 8300 block of Brown Avenue, West Point, have each been charged with two counts of grand larceny and one count of conspiracy to commit grand larceny. According to the police report, both suspects allegedly stole power tools and fishing equipment from two residences on Old Roxbury Road last Sept. 19 and Sept. 22. New Kent supervisors to host town hall
New Kent supervisors will host a town hall meeting on Thursday, Jan. 22, 6:30-8 p.m. in the New Kent High School auditorium. Chairman Thomas Evelyn recommended the meeting during the November work session. According to Evelyn, the meeting will allow citizens to voice concerns and comments to supervisors. The town hall is expected to be an informal meet and greet with county leaders.
VDOT to replace Herring Creek Bridge in Charles City
Virginia’s Department of Transportation (VDOT) will begin replacing the Herring Creek Bridge on Route 5 (John Tyler Memorial Highway) in Charles City on Jan. 5. During the replacement, Route 5 will be restricted to one 12-foot lane at the bridge. Additionally, a temporary traffic signal has been installed, as well as speed reduced to 35 miles per hour. Drivers can expect delays during peak hours. Sullivan receives nod as Democratic representative for special election
Charles City resident Kevin Sullivan has been named as the Democratic representative to challenge for the 74th House of Delegates seat in a Jan. 13 special election. Sullivan received the nod over Henrico County school board member Lamont Bagby and Charles City Board of Supervisor member Floyd Miles Sr. during a primary election on Dec. 22. Sullivan challenges for the vacated spot by Joe Morrisey, who resigned as a result of pressure from other members of the House of Delegates following a misdemeanor conviction. However, Morrisey and Republican candidate Matt Walton will vie for the vacated position as well.
New Kent man killed, three children injured in New Jersey accident
A New Kent County man died early Monday night in a three-car crash on Interstate 78 in Warren N.J., according to a report in NJ.com. The media outlet is also reporting the man’s three children, who were passengers in his car, sustained non-life threatening injuries. Kevin Hutchins, 54, and the three children, boys ages four, nine, and 11, were westbound on I-78 shortly after 7 p.m. when their 2007 Honda was rear-ended by another vehicle. Impact drove Hutchins’ car into a third vehicle. The Honda then ran off the road and struck a tree. Hutchins reportedly died at the scene….

Charles City County awarded $600,000 grant for high-speed broadband initiative
With acceptance of a $600,000 community development block grant, Charles City officials are embarking on the first phase aimed at installing high-speed broadband Internet service in the county. State officials helped the county launch the phase during a Monday afternoon check presentation in the county administration building’s boardroom. State Secretary of Commerce and Trade Maurice Jones, the event’s featured speaker, said awarding the grant is part of a state effort “to do things so a community can retain jobs, grow jobs, and help attract other businesses.” Jones said the process involves taking advantage of assets that exist in the community….

Charges lodged against CC man dismissed after lack of evidence
Without physical evidence to link a defendant to a burglary, Judge Thomas B. Hoover dismissed three charges lodged against a Charles City man. Rodney Edward Bradby Jr., 22, of the 8700 block of Little Elam Road, breathed a sigh of relief after one charge of burglary, grand larceny, and intent to sell stolen property were thrown out during Charles City Circuit Court proceedings on Dec. 19. On May 27, Eric Keck’s shop on Sturgeon Point Road was burglarized in the early morning hours. Keck, along with another employee, looked through the garage portion of the shop. Miles’ announces candidacy for 74th District special election
Charles City supervisor Floyd Miles Sr. announced his candidacy for the vacated spot for the 74th district seat. The seat, now vacated by Joe Morrissey, will be filled in a special election on Jan. 13. Arrests made in connection with separate incidents in New Kent
A New Kent County man faces grand larceny and destruction of property charges while suspects from Williamsburg and Henrico County have been arrested in connection with alleged unauthorized use of a motor vehicle. Sheridan Sutherlin Fulcher, 22, of the 5600 block of Gentry Drive in Quinton, is charged with one count each of grand larceny and destruction of property relating to a cell phone belonging to Kristina Wolin that allegedly was taken and destroyed on Dec. 8.
