Charges dropped against Delvin Barnes in Charles City abduction case
A Charles City man, arrested for an alleged brutal attack on a teenage girl in the county and an alleged kidnapping in Philadelphia, has had all charges incurred in Charles City dropped. Charles City Commonwealth’s Attorney Rob Tyler elected to drop six charges filed against 37-year old Delvin Barnes. Barnes faced one count each of attempted murder, abduction, malicious wounding, malicious wounding with chemical, inanimate object penetration, and forcible rape stemming from an Oct. 1 incident in Charles City involving a 16-year-old female from Richmond. Personal identification connects man to distribution of marijuana
To make sure precious valuables aren’t stolen, most people would place them inside a safe or in a secret, secure area of the home. For one Quinton man, keeping his personal identification with more than five ounces of marijuana has earned him a guilty conviction. Carroll William Lee Brown, 30, was found guilty on one count of distributing marijuana (more than one-half ounce) during a Dec. 8 contested trial in New Kent Circuit Court. Motorcycle racing could be returning to Colonial Downs in New Kent
New Kent County’s Planning Commission has scheduled a public hearing on a proposal that could bring motorcycle racing back to the Colonial Downs racetrack next year. Colonial Holdings Inc. is seeking a conditional use permit (CUP) to host one day of motorcycle racing, tentatively scheduled for Saturday, May 16 with a rain date the following Sunday (May 17). Racing is proposed to take place from 1-8 p.m. The public hearing is set for the commission’s Monday, December 15 meeting at 7 p.m. in the county administration building’s board room.
Nationwide IRS scam makes its way to New Kent
New Kent County Sheriff’s Office is warning citizens of a telephone scam where callers on the line are portraying themselves as representatives of the IRS. According to the report, the scammer will tell the citizen that he/she owes back taxes. The caller then states that if the citizen does not make arrangements to pay a portion of the tax debit, they will be arrested. In some instances, the caller has advised that an agent will be at the citizen’s home to take him/her into custody. Assault on uncle earns Charles City man guilty convictions
A Charles City man who assaulted his uncle during an Aug. 30 domestic dispute will serve a period of time incarcerated. Eric Karl Allen, 51, of the 4400 block of Old Union Road, was convicted on one count each of malicious wounding and misdemeanor possession of marijuana during a Dec. 5 contested trial in Charles City Circuit Court. Last summer, 74-year-old Joseph Allen was asked by his nephew’s wife to pick up his stepdaughters after she received a call from the eldest. Projected enrollment spike affects New Kent schools’ CIP
With a projected spike in student enrollment on the horizon and numerous repair concerns looming, New Kent School Board members are forging ahead with a proposed $2.15 million capital improvement plan (CIP) for the next school year. School finance director Haynie Morgheim presented 13 CIP projects, all but one penciled in for 2015-16, to board members during Monday evening’s work session. VDOT pegs $2.28 million for dangerous Charles City intersection
A dangerous intersection in Charles City County that has been the site of numerous accidents is scheduled to undergo major renovation by 2017. Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) officials announced a $2.28 million project for the reconfiguring of the intersection of Barnetts Road and Lott Cary Road during the Nov. 25 regular meeting of the county’s board of supervisors. At issue are concerns of merging traffic from Lott Cary Road northbound onto Barnetts Road and vice-versa. During the holiday season, there are many instances when a person goes beyond the call of duty and gives back to others. For one New Kent resident, she continues to provide others with meals, despite officially being retired. For the past seven years, Nora Allen has provided meals and her services voluntarily to the elder committee. Cosby Mill Road in New Kent could reopen to traffic by late January
A VDOT project that has closed Cosby Mill Road to traffic could be completed sooner than advertised, thus alleviating headaches incurred by New Kent County motorists who now have to contend with an eight-mile detour. Barricades went up Nov. 11 on the road, located in the county’s western end. Work is under way to replace a series of culverts that normally allow Black Creek to flow under the roadway but are subject to frequent blockages that produce flooding. Quinton man accepts plea deal at last second
A Quinton man opted to accept a last-second plea deal to drug charges during Nov. 24 New Kent Circuit Court proceedings. Reginald Jerron Carter, 42, of the 3200 block of Quaker Road, agreed to terms of an agreement with the Commonwealth prior to a scheduled trial. According to Carter’s attorney Todd Duval, the defendant waivered back and forth before ultimately accepting the offer.
