One big item dropped as CIP heads to NK supervisors
Although some members expressed dismay over removal of one big ticket item, New Kent’s Planning Commission voted Monday to forward a $12 million Capital Improvement Plan (CIP) for the next fiscal year to the county’s Board of Supervisors with recommendation for approval. Commission members took the action by a 9-0-1 vote following a public hearing at which no one spoke during the group’s regular monthly meeting. The proposed plan now heads to supervisors for consideration during the upcoming budget-building process for next year. Sophisticated scam surfaces
New Kent Sheriff’s Office is warning area residents to beware of a sophisticated telephone scam that surfaced March 10. The caller claims to be with the sheriff’s office and has somehow managed to manipulate caller ID so that the sheriff’s office non-emergency number shows up on the victim’s phone. According to Chief Deputy Joe McLaughlin, a New Kent resident reported receiving such a call. The computer generated number showed up on the victim’s caller ID as (804) 966-9500, which is the non-emergency number for the New Kent Sheriff’s Office. Icy road conditions cause 16 crashes in New Kent; one in Charles City
Deteriorating road conditions thanks to freezing rain and ice has caused 16 accidents in New Kent and one in Charles City. According to Virginia State Police spokesman Sgt. Thomas Molnar, the total count of crashes began at midnight on Mar. 17 up until 10 a.m. this morning. According to the officer, most accidents occurred along Interstate 64 in New Kent. Road conditions are expected to improve over the next few days as temperatures return to above freezing.
One arrested in New Kent for drug possession after traffic stop
A Richmond man has been arrested on multiple drug charges after a traffic stop in New Kent. Marcus Akeem Pryor, 25, of the 3000 block of Montrose Avenue, was arrested on Mar. 16 on one count each of possessions of a schedule I or II substance (prescription drugs), possession of a schedule IV controlled substance (“Molly” MDMA), and possession of marijuana. According to the arrest report, Pryor was the passenger of a routine traffic stop. Police conducted an investigation to search for illegal narcotics and located the substances on the arrestee. Two accept plea deals in New Kent Circuit Court
Two men accepted plea deals in unrelated cases during Monday morning proceedings in New Kent Circuit Court: –Kyle Douglas Slater, 20, of the 4800 block of Good Hope Road, Lanexa, entered a plea of guilty to an amended charge of being an accessory after the fact to grand larceny. Slater admitted that one of his friends transported two stolen golf carts to his home to hide them from authorities on June 23 of last year. Under the agreement, he received a one-year jail sentence with all but four days suspended. He must also pay $200 in restitution for damages to…

Wintry weather causes two accidents in New Kent; none in Charles City
Since mixed wintery precipitation began falling last night, State Police have been kept busy on area roads, but only two traffic accidents have been reported in New Kent and none in Charles City as of 9 a.m. The two accidents in New Kent resulted in vehicle damage only and no injuries, State Police say. But as of 7 a.m. troopers had responded to 46 crashes in the Richmond metropolitan region and were in the process of responding to an additional 17 wrecks. There have been 94 service calls in all handled by State Police dispatchers in the Richmond area.
New Kent school board meetings postponed until Mar. 19.
New Kent’s School Board has postponed a budget public hearing and its work session originally scheduled for Mar. 17 until Wednesday, Mar. 19. School board members are planning to receive public input on the school’s 2014-15 fiscal year budget on Wednesday. Other matters include proposing the 2014-15 school calendar.
Monday public hearings set for controversial Liberty Landing proposal, New Kent Capital Improvement Plan
New Kent’s Planning Commission is hosting separate public hearings Monday night (March 17) on the controversial Liberty Landing mixed-use development proposal and the county’s proposed Capital Improvement Plan (CIP). The hearings are scheduled to get under way at 7 p.m. in the county administration building’s boardroom. Liberty Landing is a commercial/residential development proposed for a 113-arce site located on the south side of Route 60 (Pocahontas Trail) near Bottoms Bridge and across from the existing Five Lakes and Patriots Landing subdivisions. Virginia Beach-based Boyd Homes (Bridgewater Crossing Inc.) is behind the proposal, which has been under consideration in the county…
