Computers donated to BCCTC by New York businessman
Last November, Bridging Communities Career and Technical Center in New Kent donated 20 refurbished computers to needy New Kent Middle School students. Now, that generosity has come full circle for the second school year. Vincent Gaines Sr. and his wife, Lupita, both King William residents, donated 65 computers to the Bridging Communities Career and Technical Center on Jan. 27. NK School Board taking plan for 3rd elementary to parents
In an effort to keep parents up to date, New Kent’s School Board is planning to hold information meetings at both of the county’s elementary schools to discuss its Jan. 27 decision to renovate the “north building” at the county’s Historic School. The renovation project would create a third elementary school for grades K-5. School officials are opting for a single meeting to attract parents from both New Kent Elementary and G.W. Maryland man receives four years in prison for burglary
A current Maryland and former Charles City resident who was involved in several burglaries in Charles City will now spend four years in prison. David Scott Yates Sr., 45, formerly of the 4500 block of Rockinghorse Lane, learned his fate during Jan. 24 Charles City Circuit Court proceedings. At a separate Nov. 22 trial, Yates Sr. accepted a plea deal, pleading guilty to three counts of grand larceny and one count of burglary from break-ins occurring between last March 20 to April 28. Public hearing on PPEA for Historic School set for February 19
New Kent supervisors have scheduled a special meeting to hold a public hearing on Feb. 19 on the PPEA for the Historic School. Supervisors set the meeting at today’s work session (Jan. 30). According to county attorney Michele Gowdy, only Marengo Management submitted a bid for the second phase of the county’s renovation of the Historic School. A subcommittee consisting of members from both the board of supervisors and school board is scheduled to meet tomorrow (Jan. 31) to discuss the proposal. New Kent, Charles City reorganize boards
Board reorganizations for supervisors and school boards have been held in New Kent and Charles City counties for the 2014 calendar year. In Charles City, District 2 supervisor Bill Coada was elected chairman and District 1 supervisor Gilbert Smith was elected vice-chairman. In New Kent, District 1 supervisor Thomas Evelyn assumes the role of chairman, replacing Ray Davis. District 2 supervisor Tommy Tiller is tasked with the duties of vice-chairman. UPDATE: Snow-related vehicle accidents in New Kent down from last week
Perhaps motorists learned a lesson after last week’s snowfall since the number of motor vehicle accidents occurring since snow started falling Tuesday in the New Kent/Charles City area is half of what occurred last week. State Police report that as of 10 a.m. today, nine crashes have occurred in New Kent County since 3 p.m. yesterday (Tuesday) compared to 18 last week. Similar to last week, all have taken place on Interstate 64. And just like last week, no accidents have been reported in Charles City County. Postponed and rescheduled events
The following is a list of rescheduled events due to inclement weather: New Kent’s division wide spelling bee has been moved to Wednesday, Feb. 5, at 1 p.m. at New Kent Middle School. New Kent Elementary School’s PTO talent show has been rescheduled for Friday, Feb. 7. New Kent at Tabb boys’ basketball game scheduled for today has been rescheduled for Saturday, Feb. 1. The game vs. West Point (originally scheduled for Feb. 1) has been cancelled. New Kent at Charles City boys’ basketball has been scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 8. Quinton man accepts plea agreement on attempted burglary
A Quinton man accepted a plea agreement during Jan. 27 New Kent Circuit Court proceedings. Connor Thompson O’Leary, 27, of the 3500 block of S. Woodland Circle, entered an Alford plea of guilty to one count of attempted burglary. One charge each on firearm larceny, non-violent possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, possession of a schedule I or II substance, and misdemeanor possession of marijuana were dropped. Lanexa man arrested on bank robbery charges
A Lanexa man has been arrested and charged in connection with two separate bank robberies in Hampton. Colt Lee Weatherby, 26, of the 15700 block of Pocahontas Trail, was arrested on Jan. 24 after Hampton authorities contacted New Kent Sheriff’s Office concerning eight felony warrants issued in that city. The warrants were in relation to separate bank robberies that occurred last October. Around midnight on Jan. 24, New Kent deputy David Teagle observed a male leaving the aforementioned address. Teagle identified the male as Weatherby and took the suspect into custody without incident. Weatherby has since been transferred to the…

New Kent veterinarian office burglary under investigation
New Kent Sheriff’s Office is seeking information regarding a burglary at Village Veterinarian Hospital, located at 10500 New Kent Highway, just west of New Kent Courthouse. During the nighttime hours of Jan. 25-26, unknown person(s) entered the building, stealing an unspecified amount of cash. Anyone with information should call Crime Stoppers at 780-1000, or New Kent Sheriff’s Office at 966-9500.
