Vehicle break-ins in New Kent under investigation
A series of vehicle break-ins in the Colonies subdivision located near Lanexa in New Kent is under investigation by the county sheriff’s office. Break-ins have occurred during the late night and early morning hours over the past several months. Thieves primarily are targeting vehicles that have been left unlocked and are stealing items found inside. The sheriff’s office reports that on one occasion, thieves entered a garage to gain access to a vehicle. New Kent man charged with abduction, assault
A New Kent County man is being held in jail without bond after allegedly abducting and assaulting his girlfriend. Deandrew Lamont Jones, 33, of the 20400 block of Tabernacle Road in Barhamsville, is charged with one count each of felony abduction (by force, intimidation, or deception) and misdemeanor domestic assault of a family member in connection with an incident that the New Kent Sheriff’s Office said occurred on Jan. 2. School chiefs in New Kent, Charles City stepping down
Searches are expected to be under way soon to find new school superintendents in both New Kent and Charles City counties. Less than three weeks apart, New Kent school superintendent Rick Richardson and Charles City school superintendent Janet Crawley have said they plan to retire effective next June 30. Crawley announced her decision following a Dec. 18 closed session with the Charles City School Board. Last night (Wednesday), Richardson followed suit during New Kent School Board’s meeting. CC man receives no active time for hit-and-run in New Kent
A Charles City man will serve no active time after a felony hit and run accident near Providence Forge. Michael Lee Wallace, 41, of the 11800 block of Canora Lane, received a five-year suspended sentence in New Kent Circuit Court proceedings Monday morning. Wallace was convicted on one count of felony hit and run during an Oct. 26 trial. In that trial, evidence revealed that Wallace’s car struck a Hummer belonging to Michael Ballard on Dec. 22, 2012. Six suspects indicted, arrested in New Kent drug operation
A multi-jurisdictional grand jury has handed up indictments on four men and two women, all Richmond residents, who are charged with multiple drug distribution and conspiracy to distribute counts in New Kent County. In November, New Kent investigators working with the Twin Rivers Drug Task Force began conducting a series of controlled drug buys utilizing undercover informants. Most of the buys dealt with cocaine, but one suspect allegedly sold heroin. Dandridge building sought by New Kent Historical Society
The New Kent Historical Society has been given the opportunity to purchase the Martha Dandridge Woman’s Club building that could be used as a permanent museum. Members of the society and the community attended a specially called meeting of the society on Sunday, Jan. 5 to discuss the purchase and fundraising for the museum. The property, currently the Martha Dandridge Woman’s Club, has a long history of educating people of New Kent County. Maryland pair using bogus credit cards guilty of fraud
A pair of Maryland men who attempted to buy gift and prepaid phone cards using bogus credit cards at two New Kent grocery stores pleaded guilty to credit card fraud Monday in county circuit court. Sallu Deen, 31, and Alieu Mansaray, 29, both of the 7700 block of Seans Terrace in Lanham, Md., had more than 60 credit cards either on their person or in their vehicle when New Kent deputies caught up to them at their second grocery store stop. Developer proposing to breathe new life into Maidstone at New Kent Courthouse
A Richmond developer is proposing to revitalize a village development at New Kent Courthouse that has remained stagnant since undergoing bankruptcy and foreclosure proceedings two years ago. The Maidstone development, part of the New Kent Courthouse Village project, had its beginnings nearly 10 years ago as the brainchild of county resident John Crump. Several suspects arrested during holiday break in New Kent
New Kent Sheriff’s Office has arrested several individuals in relation to alleged incidents over the holidays: –Christopher Michael Walls, 28, and Jesse Ray Edwards, 22, both of the 1300 block of Waterside Drive, Lanexa, have been arrested on separate charges in relation to an altercation.
