Top steeplechase horses competing in Dogwood Classic at Colonial Downs in New Kent
Last year’s top three-year-old steeplechase horses, including champion More Tea Vicar, will test themselves against older competitors when they clash in the featured $25,000 allowance hurdle at the inaugural Dogwood Classic at Colonial Downs on Saturday, April 6. First post time for the five-race program at the New Kent track is 1 p.m. More Tea Vicar, bred in Virginia by owner Kinross Farm, secured the 2012 three-year-old championship with a victory in the Raymond G. Charles City/New Kent group observing April as National Child Abuse Prevention Month
April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month and Charles City/New Kent Healthy Families is partnering with the Virginia Coalition for Child Abuse Prevention, the Virginia Department of Social Services, and Prevent Child Abuse Virginia to raise awareness about the role everyone can play in valuing children and strengthening their families. Thousands of Virginia children suffer abuse or neglect every year. In FY 2012, there were 52,675 children reported as possible victims of abuse and/or neglect. The Virginia Department of Social Services found that 6,365 children were maltreated, and of those, 35 children died as a result of abuse and/or neglect….

The Division of Motor Vehicles’ DMV 2 Go mobile customer service center is coming to Charles City and New Kent counties in April. In Charles City, the date is Monday, April 15, 9 a.m.-4 p.m. at the county government offices located at 10900 Courthouse Road, Charles City. First Dogwood Classic runs April 6, features tailgate contest
The inaugural running of the Dogwood Classic at Colonial Downs takes place Saturday, April 6. Tailgate areas open at 9 a.m. with the first steeplechase horse race set for 1 p.m. Tailgaters have a chance to win prizes based on how creative they can get with the event theme, “The Wild, Wild West.” There are five different categories that attendees can participate in, headlined by the “Best Tailgate Party” (based on the theme) competition. Draft budget below CC schools’ expectations
Charles City county administrator Zach Trogdon revealed the first draft budget for the 2014 fiscal year. And even though 51 percent of the budget is designated for county public schools, visible concern could be seen on the faces of school board members and superintendent of schools Janet Crawley. Trogdon unveiled a total budget of $20,951,258 at Tuesday’s supervisors meeting. Of that amount, $10,665,964 is designated for schools and includes $4,581,216 in local money for schools. Converting NK Historic School to elementary school on table
New Kent School Board members have unanimously approved a resolution to have school staff work with county staff to further explore the prospect of converting the county’s Historic School into an elementary school. School board members made the move during a March 18 meeting with District 1 Board of Supervisors member Thomas Evelyn. Evelyn first proposed the elementary school concept during supervisors’ emergency meeting on March 15. Colonial Downs, Strawberry Hill owners settle dispute
A settlement has been reached in the legal dispute over the Strawberry Hill Races name involving Colonial Downs and the mother/daughter duo of Christie Harrell and Mildred Dotson, who own the trademark. The parties involved announced the matter has been “amicably resolved” as of March 20. According to a press release from Colonial Downs, the Strawberry Hill Races are to take place starting in April 2014 and become a yearly event. Thumbs up for motorcycle racing from NK planners
Despite protests from residents living in Brickshire and adjoining subdivisions, Colonial Downs’ application to hold one day of motorcycle racing this summer received the blessing of New Kent’s Planning Commission. By a 10-0-1 vote on March 18, planners passed on a favorable recommendation to the county’s Board of Supervisors. Now, supervisors are scheduled to hold a public hearing on the racetrack’s conditional use permit application during their April 8 meeting and could take action that same night.
