Charles City County Public Schools will be closed from Nov. 21-25 as part of an extended Thanksgiving holiday break. School board members voted unanimously to change Nov. 21 and Nov. 22 to mental health days as part of Tuesday night’s school board meeting. Nov. 21 had been scheduled as a regular day, while Nov. 22 was slated to be a half day for students. Nov. 23-25 were already scheduled to be holidays for students and teachers. Schools will reopen on Monday, Nov. 28.
New Kent County Sheriff’s Office is seeking information regarding a shooting that resulted in a fatality on Nov. 12. At approximately 11:58 p.m., New Kent’s Sheriff’s Office responded to the 9000 block of Pine Hollow Road regarding a male suffering from a gunshot wound. When officers arrived, the male was pronounced deceased on the scene. The body was transported to the medical examiner’s office in Richmond for the official cause of death. In August, Charles City’s Board of Supervisors held a special meeting to weigh the pros and cons of bike races within county borders. After that meeting, a directive was given to develop an ordinance to address that issue. After Tuesday night’s board meeting, it will be at least an additional month before something is presented to county leaders. County leaders voted 3-0 to begin the process to develop Market 5 at the southeast intersection of Route 5 (John Tyler Memorial Highway) and Route 155 (Courthouse Road).
