A Richmond man will spend three months in jail after entering a guilty plea to DUI (third offense within 10 years) during Monday morning proceedings in New Kent Circuit Court. New Kent’s Board of Supervisors have put the final touches on solidifying funding for a new elementary school. County leaders unanimously approved appropriating $35,593,691 to construct the school that will be located in Quinton during the board’s Nov. 12 regular meeting. Dating back to 2014, talks about a new school arose after enrollment projections from Welden-Cooper expected a boom in New Kent, as it was ranked the second-fastest growing community in Virginia. New Kent Sheriff’s Office have discovered the vehicle of a New Kent woman who had been missing since Feb. 15. According to a press release, New Kent Sheriff’s Office received a call from two hunters around 11 a.m. on Nov. 11 about the discovery of a motor vehicle in a wooded area of Henpeck Road. The Benjamin Harrison Bridge, that connects the counties of Charles City and Prince George, will be closed for two consecutive weekends starting Friday, Nov. 13. Virginia’s Department of Transportation (VDOT) announced that starting at 12 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 13, the bridge will be closed to all traffic for rope and clutch replacement on the bridge. New Kent’s Board of Supervisors held a work session Friday morning at the New Kent Forestry Center in Providence Forge. One of the first issues addressed was with the residents of Rock Creek Villa. Residents voiced concerns about roads in the area. County Administrator Rodney Hathaway made a recommendation to start a process with Virginia’s Department of Transportation to survey the area. A Providence Forge man will spend 13 months in jail on DUI related crimes after receiving formal sentencing during Charles City Circuit Court proceedings on Nov. 5. Terrell Jovon Johnson, 35, of the 8800 block of Samaria Lane, received a five-year sentence with four years suspended on one count of DUI maiming stemming from an Oct. 17, 2019 offense. Two men were indicted as part of grand jury proceedings that took place on Nov. 5 in Charles City Circuit Court: –Joseph E. Brown, 56, of the 7300 block of Trevors Road, Charles City, on one count of abduction. Brown allegedly blocked his victim in with a car and wouldn’t allow them to leave on July 10. –Haywood Carnell Robinson, 58, of the 4400 block of Wayside Road, Charles City, on three counts of aggravated sexual battery with a minor. The offenses allegedly took place in Oct. 2019.
Voters in Charles City County have elected to keep the Civil War monuments at the courthouse complex. In a question posed by referendum, “Should the Board of Supervisors of Charles City County remove both the Civil War monument in from of the Old Courthouse and the Civil War monument inside the Old Courthouse?”, 2,360 votes (55.11 percent) responded with an answer of “no”, while 1,922 (44.89 percent) responded “yes”. A charge lodged against a Quinton man was dismissed Monday in New Kent Circuit Court. Travis Wayne Bragg, 29, of the 7800 block of Timber Drive, was found not guilty on a lone count of possession of a Schedule I/II substance. Bragg was charged with illegally possessing methamphetamine on Oct. 24, 2019. However, evidence presented at the trial was not enough to convict him of the charge, leading to the not guilty verdict being rendered.
New Kent’s Board of Supervisors approved an appropriation to complete Phase 1 of the Pine Fork Park Project. Board members voted 4-1 to move $325,591 from the capital reserve fund to finish the project during Tuesday morning’s work session. For the most part with the exception of the concession stand, Phase 1 of Pine Fork Park is near completion. The project, originally priced at $4.38 million, had been reduced down to $4.121 million after reducing some costs.
