Richmond man admits to possessing cocaine in New Kent
A Richmond man entered a guilty plea to possessing cocaine in New Kent. Markene DeJuan Jones, 30, of the 3600 block of E. Broad Rock Road, admitted to committing the offense during Monday morning proceedings in New Kent Circuit Court. Jones was arrested on Apr. 28 after an investigation detected that he was in possession of the illegal substance. A presentence report is being prepared with formal sentencing scheduled for Apr. 26. New Kent superintendent, school board shifts focus to older students return to buildings
As second and third graders returned to a hybrid approach in New Kent County Public Schools, the narrative now focuses on bringing back older groups of students to the classroom. New Kent Superintendent of Schools Brian Nichols unveiled modifications for Cohort 4 and Cohort 5, groups that target on older student returns, during Monday night’s New Kent School Board meeting. Stormwater issues at Pine Fork Park results in $111,000 appropriation to address
Unexpected costs and design flaws in Pine Fork Park has resulted in a financial headache for New Kent County. Unfortunately, the headache will require a $111,000 visit to the Capital Improvement Funds. New Kent’s Board of Supervisors appropriated the funds to address environmental issues during Wednesday morning’s work session. After breaking ground in 2019, the $4.5 million project has been in the first phase for completion. Parents and intrigued members of the public received their first glance of redistricting plans for New Kent County Public Schools with the addition of the new Quinton Elementary School. Matthew Cropper of Cropper GIS services made his presentation at the Jan. 20 public meeting on the subject with New Kent’s School Board. Driving under influence of drugs lands Providence Forge man in jail for four months
A Providence Forge man will spend the next four months in jail after being found guilty on two misdemeanor charges related to a car accident on Feb. 5, 2020. Melvin Darnell Randall Jr., 26, of the 5800 block of Yellow Jasmine Terrance, entered no contest pleas to one count each of misdemeanor DUI (first offense) and misdemeanor contributing to the delinquency of a minor. Charles City superintendent recommends $6.8 million in local funding for FY2021-22 operating budget
With theme core values and principles that include learning, integrity, growth, and collaboration, Charles City County Superintendent of Schools Dalphine Joppy proposed a $6,843,772 operating budget for the FY2021-22 school year during the Jan. 21 special meeting. Charles City schools to survey on possible return to in-person instruction
As school districts begin to weigh the possibility for in-person learning once again, Charles City County Public Schools are using recently established guidelines to develop a survey to determine when, or if, students will return to buildings. Richmond man receives three-month sentence for drug possession in Charles City
A Richmond man will spend the next three months in jail after pleading guilty to possessing an illegal substance during Friday morning procedures in Charles City Circuit Court. Larry Edward Gammon, 39, of the 4700 block of Caldwell Avenue, entered guilty pleas to one count each of possession of a Schedule I/II substance and misdemeanor driving on a suspended license. Supervisor boards reorganize for 2021
Both Charles City and New Kent’s Board of Supervisors reorganized at recent meetings for the 2021 calendar year. In New Kent, District 1 representative Thomas Evelyn was elected chairman. District 2 leader Tommy Tiller will assume the role of vice-chairman. In Charles City, District 1 leader Gilbert Smith was named as chairman for the year. District 3 representative Lewis Black III was given the nod as vice-chairman.
Lanexa man, charged with murder, indicted by New Kent grand jury
A Lanexa man has been formally indicted with a second-degree murder charge by a New Kent grand jury. Michael Anthony Jenkins, 39, of the 15000 block of Pocahontas Trail, received indictments on one count each of second-degree murder, grand larceny, burglary, possession of a weapon by a non-violent felon, and two counts of firearm larceny. In Dec. 2019, New Kent Sheriff’s Office received a call for service around 2 p.m. on Dec. 4. First responders arrived to the scene and located a male down.
