Second and third graders who attend elementary schools in New Kent will have to wait a little longer before having an opportunity to walk through the building doors. For the second time in two months, New Kent’s School Board has postponed the return of second and third graders. And the decision this time was as difficult as the first time. A Richmond man has been indicted by a Charles City grand jury. Larry E. Gammon, 39, of the 4700 block of Caldwell Avenue, had one indictment of possession of a Schedule I/II substance certified by the grand jury during Tuesday morning proceedings in Charles City Circuit Court. The indictment alleges that Gammon was in possession of cocaine after he was pulled over for a traffic infraction on Oct. 14, 2020. Gammon’s case it tentatively set for Jan. 15.
Internet services continue to be an issue in Charles City County. Hopefully, a Tuesday night update provided a glimmer of hope for a topic that has been plaguing citizens for five years. Charles City Assistant County Rhonda Russell provided an update on the two providers that are planning to come to the county as part of Charles City’s Board of Supervisors meeting. Russell first addressed SCS Broadband, a company that had planned to bring wireless Internet to citizens through the airwaves. A Hampton man will serve an alternative sentence for grand theft auto after receiving formal sentencing during Monday afternoon proceedings in New Kent Circuit Court. John Perlie Dawson Jr., 33, of 16 Kenneth Street, learned that he has been accepted into the CCAP (Community Corrections Alternative Program) and will serve at least two years in the program. After six months of negotiations, Charles City Public Schools inked a contract with ABM Solutions during Tuesday night’s regular school board meeting. The agreement will allow the two parties into a contract that will allow ABM Solutions to assist with repairs in the school while providing a cost savings. In June of this year, it was determined that the group could assist with $4.6 million in repairs to the school’s complex. Second and third graders residing in New Kent County who elect to return to in-person learning now have a firm date. After receiving updates from elementary school principals, New Kent’s school board voted unanimously to allow grades two and three to return to in-person learning on Jan. 19. A Mattaponi woman has died as the result of a Dec. 3 crash in New Kent County. Lottie M. Taliaferro, died at the scene of a crash on Route 273 (Farmer’s Drive) just before 7 a.m. In a press release from the Virginia State Police, a 2018 Mitsubishi Mirage was traveling south when it crossed the center line and struck a 2002 Chrysler Concorde.
