Quinton man arrested in connection to road raging shooting

A Quinton man has been apprehended and taken into custody after a road rage incident led to a shooting in the New Kent Crossing Shopping Center. Jacob A. Rivera, 25, has been arrested in connection to the shooting following an investigation by New Kent Sheriff’s Office. In a Sunday afternoon press release from New Kent County Sheriff’s Office, at approximately 3 p.m. a report came in about a shooting incident in the shopping area. A preliminary investigation revealed that one victim, an adult male, sustained a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to the lower portion of his body and he self-transported himself…

Charles City Investigator helps solved 1979 cold case

Authorities in Charles City County have solved a cold case dating back to 1979. In a press release from Charles City Sheriff’s Office, Virginia State Police contacted the sheriff’s office with information they received concerning an unidentified body that washed up on the shore of the James River off Sturgeon Point Road on Aug. 28, 1979. Charles City investigator Zohra Anwari handled the case, receiving information from Genetic Genealogy to help identify possible relatives of the deceased. NKBOS approves $61,500 sewer pipes repair for Patriots Landing

New Kent’s Board of Supervisors approved an emergency request to repair sewer pipes that caused an erosion at Patriots Landing Place. County leaders approved $61,500 for the services to BTS to fix the hazard as part of Tuesday night’s regular meeting. Director of Public Utilities Mike Lang addressed the board about the situation. Located at the 7800 block of Patriots Landing Place, the repair is a sewer easement that has a scour threatening the pipes. Charles City citizens call for resignations of supervisors, county administrator

Charles City citizens are calling for the resignation of two of the county leaders as well as the recently hired county administrator. For approximately 70 minutes of the 90-minute Charles City Board of Supervisors meeting on Nov. 25, citizens lashed out with the direction of the county, with many of them expressing frustration and lack of faith in leadership. New Kent leaders approve financial transfers to address emergency needs

New Kent’s Board of Supervisors addressed several issues during the Nov. 12 regular board meeting. -Approved $86,000 from the Colonial Downs reserve fund to renovate George Watkins Elementary School Field. New Kent County Parks and Recreation Assistant Director Jason Baldwin told board members the field has safety hazards. Among them include large trees with debris falling onto the field, 40-year-old fencing and dugouts, and the field continuously holding water. The fields are one of several areas in the county that are used by youth organizations. -Approved $151,595.91 for piping and leaking repairs at the Parham Landing Wastewater Treatment Plant. Public…

Quinton woman receives 10-month sentence for driving related convictions

A Quinton woman will spend ten months in jail after committing several driving offenses in New Kent County. Laura Ann White, 41, of the 7500 block of Lakeshore Drive, entered a guilty plea to one count of driving while intoxicated (third or subsequent offense), felony driving while revoked, an amended charge of misdemeanor trespassing (originally breaking and entering), and felony child abuse as part of an agreement reached during Monday morning proceedings in New Kent Circuit Court. Sandston man indicted for allegedly harassing victim in New Kent County

A Sandston man who allegedly harassed an individual multiple times has been indicted on several charges following Monday morning proceedings in New Kent Circuit Court. Robert Steven Maxey, 63, of the 3200 block of Portugee Road, was indicted on five counts of violation of a protective order, three counts of threatening by writing, and a single charge of misdemeanor failure to appear by a New Kent grand jury. New Kent School Board approves $4.9 million CIP for FY2026-27

A modification of Capital Improvement Projects (CIP) for New Kent Public Schools was brought before the school board Tuesday night. School board members heard and approved a recommendation from school leaders and administration referencing repairs and school upgrades needed for the future. Among some of the requests that were recommended for consideration to the school board include roof replacement at New Kent High School ($210,138.62), HVAC replacement at the high school ($1,057,248), and switch gear replacement and repairs ($377,704). Richmond man receives 104-year prison sentence for crimes against minor in New Kent

A Richmond man who committed crimes against a minor in 2010 was hit with a sentence that will likely keep him in prison for the rest of his life. Lonnie Dwayne Taylor was sentenced to more than 100 years in prison during Monday morning proceedings in New Kent Circuit Court. During a two-day trial this past June, a jury heard the case against Taylor.
