The Chickahominy Health District (CHD) announced today (March 27) the first COVID-19 case in New Kent County. The individual is a female in her 20s who has been monitoring herself at home and whose symptoms are resolving. Charles City County, who also falls under the umbrella in the Chickahominy Health District, identified its first case last week. New Kent Sheriff’s Office is seeking information relating to an early morning larceny on March 26 in the Bottoms Bridge area of the county. Around 1:40 a.m., three suspects entered the FasMart located at the 2000 block of Pocahontas Trail. Items stolen from the incident were cigarettes and lottery tickets. The impact of the coronavirus (COVID-19) has already impacted school and government buildings. Now, its aim is now being directed at financial projects, including the construction of a new elementary school in New Kent. A mandate by Virginia Governor Ralph Northam has closed school building doors for the rest of the academic year. A Williamsburg man will spend the next five years in prison after entering a no contest plea to a single count of abduction and two counts of misdemeanor assault and battery on a family member. Three men who tried to destroy a fire protection system at Henrico Jail East in New Kent have been indicted by a grand jury. Treione Gholson, 22, James Terrance Edgefield Jr., 28, and John Lawrence Ellis Jr., 22, all of Henrico Jail East, were indicted on charges that stemmed over a one-month period. On Nov. 5, 2019, Edgefield and Ellis allegedly tried to break the system. Three days later, Gholson allegedly tried the same thing. The spread of COVID-19, better known as coronavirus, throughout the nation and the Commonwealth of Virginia has resulted in the closure of Charles City and New Kent County Public Schools for two weeks.
