Bertha Roberta Carter

Bertha Roberta Carter, “Bert”, transitioned from time to eternity on Monday, June 27, 2016.

She was born on Nov. 19, 1950 in Charles City County, Virginia, to Herbert Hoover Carter Sr. and Kathleen Althea Bradby Carter, the oldest of six children from this union.

She was preceded in death by her father, paternal grandparents, Thomas E. Carter Sr., Lillian Wallace Carter-Cotman and Robert Cotman; and maternal grandparents, Samuel A. Sr. and Arnella Cotman Bradby.

She was educated in the Charles City County school system, graduating in June 1969. She furthered her education by attending John Tyler Community College, obtaining a certificate in keypunch/data processing. Her work career consisted of her employment at John Tyler Community College, the State of Virginia, and Philip Morris’ Data Security, with her retirement in April 2007.

Bert accepted Jesus Christ as her Savior in Aug. 1962 at the age of 11, was baptized and joined Little Elam Baptist Church. She was active in the church, including serving as a Sunday school teacher, junior and senior choir member, and most recently a church purchaser. She loved her senior adult Sunday school class and was saddened when she couldn’t attend.

An extremely private person, she spent her lifetime showing her love to her family, especially her son and grandbabies. She was always willing to do for others rather than herself and blessed so many people with her generosity.

She leaves to cherish her memory her loving and devoted family: son, Christopher (Chris); grandchildren Kadenze, Kylee, and C.J.; mother, Kathleen A. Carter; her brothers and sisters; Herbert Jr. (Lynne), Lloyd Sr. (Elaine), Pearl Dwyer (Blandon), Althea Miles (Henry), and Cheryl Jones (Archer Jr.); six great-nieces and one great-nephew, Jasmine, Semeicha, Sapphira, Chloe, Carlin, Tzion, and Elijah; aunts and uncles, Mary C. Crewe, Thomas E. Carter, Robert H. and Elberta Cotman of Abilene, Texas, Loretta S. Crawley, Lillian A. Crump, and Agnes Bradby; grandmother, Mamie J. Bradby; and a host of cousins, relatives, and friends, two devoted, Dea. Edward Lee and Mrs. Edith Atkins.

Family received friends at J. Leroy Charity Funeral Home, 5130 John Tyler Memorial Highway, Charles City, Va. 23030 on Thursday, June 30, 6-8 p.m. Funeral services were held on Friday, July 1, 2016, 1 p.m. at Little Elam Baptist Church, 8840 Church Lane, Charles City, Va. 23030 with the Rev. Danny Patterson, Pastor, officiating and the Rev. James H. Johnson Jr. as Eulogist. Interment followed in the church’s cemetery.

The family would like to thank everyone for all expressions of kindness during the illness and passing of their loved one.
