Charles C. Spruell Sr.

Charles C. Spruell Sr., 84, of Charles City, VA, departed this life on Thursday, Jan. 20, 2022.

He was born on May 10, 1937 in Charles City, VA. Charles worked for the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation for 28 years as a horticulturist, providing extensive knowledge of trees, flowers, vegetables, nuts, bushes, and fruits. He also volunteered for 10 years with the Charles City Volunteer Fire Department.

Charles was full of energy, love, and wisdom for anyone who would give their ear for a moment. When the music came on, he grabbed the closest person to him and danced all the way to the dance floor. He loved performing the latest dance moves, many created by his own cool and collected swag. He was our father, grandfather, husband, uncle, brother, and dear friend that was loved and gave more love and respect in return. He will wholeheartedly be missed.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Phillip and Melvina Spruell; brother, Willie Rogers Spruell Sr.; sister, Estelle Francis Shepperd; and son-in-law, Robert Fitzgerald Sr.

Charles leaves to cherish precious memories, his wife of 65 years, Lue Elizabeth Spruell; three daughters, Vanessa B. Spruell-Fitzgerald of Williamsburg, VA, Sherby-Jean Coles (John) of Charles City, VA, and Nicole Michelle Watts (Allester “Apollo”) of Prince George, VA; son, Charles C. Spruell Jr. “June” of Charles City, VA; sister, Mary Johnson (James); 19 grandchildren, a host of great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other loving relatives, and many caring friends.
