James Waverly Smith, 76, of New Kent, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, October 31, 2017.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter Calvin and Annie Louise Smith.

James is survived by his loving wife of 45 years, Carolyn Smith; two sons, Mark (Monika) and Michael (Ashley) Smith; grandchildren, Mathew, Allie, Elliott, and Waverly Smith; brothers, Calvin (Mary Anne), Linwood, and Charles (Esther) Smith; sisters, Elise Mae Allen (Herman), Mary Lou Rowe, and Carolyn Washburn (Claude); and many nieces and nephews.

James served in the Army Reserves and retired as an electrician from Hill Electric. He enjoyed farming with his brother and caring for their cattle, working in his vegetable garden, hunting, and family vacations. He is a life-long member of Corinth Baptist Church where he served in many capacities including overseeing construction for the church’s first fellowship hall. Although a quiet man, his actions spoke volumes.

A funeral was held on Saturday, Nov. 4, 11 a.m. at Corinth Baptist Church, 11650 New Kent Highway, New Kent, VA. Interment followed in the church cemetery. The family received friends from 6-8 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 3, also at the church.
