Jess Goodman Jr., of Quinton, Va., son of Jess Emory and Nannie Craft Goodman, died peacefully Sept. 18, 2017 at Bon Secours Community Hospital in Mechanicsville, Va.

He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Grace Anne Goodman; son, Ralph Goodman (Kathy); daughter, Audrey Ritenour (fiancé, Charles); two stepchildren, John Lewis and Regina Noel, both of Rockbridge County; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Jess graduated in 1953 from New Kent High School where he learned to love sports while playing football, basketball, and track. He was drafted into the U.S. Army and served two years of duty in Japan. Jess followed in his dad’s footsteps and retired from the CSX Railroad (formerly C&O) after 30 years of service as brakeman and conductor. Jess was also a Civil War buff and a sportsman who loved to hunt and fish.

He loved New Kent County, where he lived most of his life. After retirement, one of the things that gave him great satisfaction was photographing the athletic events at New Kent High School then distributing his photos to the players who affectionately called him “Mr. Jesse.” He volunteered to pick up trash after the athletic games as port of his love for the school. Jess was the first recipient of the Trojan Award that is given every year to someone who contributes to the school in a special way. Jess was often referred to being as New Kent’s number one fan.

Jess will be missed clearly and remembered affectionately by so many.
