Polly Allen, age 76, of New Kent, passed away peacefully at home Sunday, Oct. 28, 2012 after an extended illness. She was born in Halifax, NC on June 15, 1936. She worked for many years as a daycare provider in Hampton and New Kent where she was fondly known as “Memaw” to the many children she loved and helped to raise. During her retirement years she took special joy in her family, traveling, fishing, working in her flower garden, feeding her birds and enjoying Christmas which was her favorite time of year. Betty Nobles “Boots” Helms, 75, of New Kent, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 16, surrounded by her family. She was a devoted wife and a loving mother to her six children and their families. Betty is survived by her husband of 53 years, Moade Helms. She is also survived by two daughters, Lisa Shrader (Daniel), Donna Dowdy (Stuart); four sons, Randall Aplin (Diane), Ronnie Aplin (Cathy), Gary Helms (Debbie), Dwayne Helms (Brenda); a sister, Alethea Richardson; 22 grandchildren and 34 great-grandchildren. Emile Joseph Plante Jr., 91, of New Kent and formally of Faber, died Saturday Sept. 22, 2012 at the Memorial Regional Medical Center in Mechanicsville. He was born Nov. 10, 1920 in New Hampshire, a son of the late Emile J. Plante Sr. and Lucy Fairbanks Plante.
