Raymond Foster Shaffer

Raymond Foster Shaffer, 80, of Barhamsville, died May 11, 2013.

He served 22 years in the United States Army as a CWII Warrant Officer in the Transportation Corporation. Raymond was a veteran of the Korean Conflict earning a Silver Star and served two tours of duty in Vietnam. He was an atomic veteran involved in the testing of the H-Bomb in the Eniwetok Islands.

After his military life he received his master’s license as a Merchant Seaman working with tugboats. He was the manager of Jamestown Scotland Ferry and retired when he was 72 years of age.

Raymond was a charter member of New Kent Rotary, a member of the VFW Post 8046 and enjoyed bowling and fishing in his free time.

He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Laverne Wilson Shaffer; a son, John Raymond Shaffer of New Kent; a daughter, Audrey Sue Babb of York, Pa.; two grandchildren, Angelia Thomas and William Babb Jr., both of South Carolina; one great-granddaughter, Morgan Isabella Babb of S.C.; two brothers, Harry Shaffer of Columbus, Ga. and Charles M. Shaffer of Virginia Beach.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.
