Shirley Harrison Carter Sr.

Shirley Harrison Carter, Sr., 87, of Charles City, VA, passed away on Sunday, February 12, 2017.

Shirley earned a Master’s Degree at Virginia Tech in 1953 and served in the U.S. Air Force and Civil Service for more than 40 years. He was stationed in North and South Carolina, Alabama, Iceland, and Virginia, retiring with a rank of Captain.

He developed an interest in computer technology while in college, and worked with pioneering computer languages and training during his Civil Service career at Fort Lee.

As a young man during WWII, he worked with the Virginia Protective Force. Later volunteer service included help with hurricane relief efforts and work with the American Red Cross.

While attending Virginia Tech, he met Nancy, his wife of 51 years, on a blind double-date.

He enjoyed agriculture, reading, big band and jazz music, competitive and recreational shooting, and maintained interests in history and technology.

Shirley was preceded in death by his wife, Nancy Jane Jones; his son, S. Harrison Carter, Jr.; and his brother, C. Hill Carter.

He is survived by his sister, Gertrude Macon; his children, Jane Luck, Jimmy Carter, Rachel Long, and Chip Carter; and his granddaughter, Emily Long.

Visitation was held at Nelsen Funeral Home, 4650 S. Laburnum Ave, Richmond, on Friday, Feb 17, 6-8 p.m.

The funeral service was held on Saturday, Feb. 18, 1 p.m. at Westover Episcopal Church, Charles City.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Nancy Jane Jones Carter Music Scholarship Fund, Longwood University Foundation, 201 High St., Farmville, VA 23909.
