Thomas Randolph Williams

Thomas Randolph Williams, affectionately known as “Red” to his friends and “Pop” to his family, passed away in the early morning hours of October 6, 2026. Born on March 17, 1940, in New Kent County, Virginia, Randolph leaves behind a legacy of faith, public service, community leadership, and devotion to family.

In 1988, Randolph made history when Judge Russell M. Carneal appointed him as the first African American male to serve as Clerk of Circuit Court, succeeding Mrs. Iona W. Adkins, the first African American female to hold the position. Randolph was subsequently elected and faithfully served his community for sixteen years until his retirement.

His commitment to service extended far beyond the courthouse. Randolph was actively involved in numerous civic and community organizations, including the NAACP, the Charles City Democratic Committee, the Charles City Social Services Board, and the Charles City Economic Development Authority. He also helped establish the Charles City Athletic Association, serving as president and financial manager, and coached Little League football and T-ball, supporting the growth and development of local youth.

Above all, Randolph cherished his family. Married to his beloved wife, Ann, for 58 years, he enjoyed traveling with his wife, daughters, granddaughters, and friends. He took pride in watching his granddaughters participate in sports and dance, creating memories that his family will treasure for a lifetime.

Known for his infectious humor, warm personality, and love of a good joke, Randolph had a gift for bringing laughter to every gathering. Whether serving his community, encouraging young people, or spending time with loved ones, he made a lasting impression on those around him.

Randolph is survived by his wife, Ann; daughters LaTonya Williams and Christy Williams-Freeman; granddaughters Alexis Williams and Christin Freeman; extended family members; and a host of relatives and friends.

His life was a testament to the power of faith, service, leadership, and love. Thomas Randolph Williams will be remembered not only for the history he made and the community he served, but also for the laughter, wisdom, and cherished memories he leaves behind.
