• Gloucester opens contest with four goals, coasts past New Kent

  

  New Kent’s Lady Trojans field hockey team opened their home slate by hosting a Gloucester Lady Dukes team that consisted of University of Richmond commit Charlotte Houtz. And for the visiting Lady Dukes, all that attention on her made it easier for her teammates to score. Five Gloucester players found the back of the net as they coasted to a 6-0 mercy rule victory over New Kent during the Sept. 8 Bay Rivers District matchup. • Charles City School Board Member Royce Paige succumbs

  

  A Charles City School Board member who served more than two decades in the position during two different stints has passed away. Royce Paige, 82, who was serving as an at-large member on the school board, passed away last week according to a press release from Charles City County’s School Board. Paige served 23 years as a member on Charles City’s School Board, covering two stints. Paige was first elected in 1995 to represent District 1 where he served for 16 years until 2011. • Trojan turnovers costly as Poquoson shuts out New Kent 13-0

  Costly mistakes by New Kent’s offense resulted in the Poquoson Islanders walking out with a win. Poquoson capitalized on three fumbles by the hosting Trojans en route to a 13-0 victory during the Sept. 3 Bay Rivers District football contest. Just moments into the game, Poquoson took advantage of a Trojans’ miscue. New Kent’s Braylon Simpson was stripped of the ball by Poquoson’s Heath Reynolds. • New Kent wins five set volleyball thriller over Tabb

  The new era of New Kent’s Lady Trojans’ volleyball continues to keep up the precedence of being a strong program. Such was the case on Sept. 3. The Lady Trojans survived a tough battle against the visiting Tabb Lady Tigers, winning a five-set thriller 25-12, 24-26, 25-16, 22-25, 15-4 to remain undefeated on the season. • Two recognized on Honors’ List at Brightpoint Community College

  Two local students were recognized for their academic honors at Brightpoint Community College for the Summer 2026 semester. Kayla King of Charles City and Zayveon Brown of New Kent were named to the Honors’ List for their academic success. Students who have been named to the Honors’ List must have completed at least 24 credit hours and accumulate a grade-point average of 3.5 or higher.

• Adkins announced as Commonwealth Humanities Awardee

  Stephen Adkins, the Chief of the Chickahominy Tribe based in Charles City County, has been announced as a 2026 Commonwealth Humanities Awardee. The award is given to a person or group who exemplifies humanitarian qualities, beliefs, and values. “As an exploration of human stories, beliefs, and creativity, the humanities help us create and question our values and how we should leave,” said Virginia Humanities’ executive director Matthew Gibson in a press release. “We established the Commonwealth Humanities Award as a way to recognize the great work that other institutions and individuals are doing to examine those questions, strengthen social connection,…
