• New Kent County Sheriff’s Office wins HEAT award

  New Kent County Sheriff Lee Bailey and New Kent County Sheriff’s Department was recognized as an award winner for the Help Eliminate Auto Theft (HEAT) program. Bailey was instrumental as New Kent County Sheriff’s Office won the “Sheriff’s Agency” category for populations between 20,000 and 100,000 residents. New Kent County deputies Wyatt Johnston and Joey McLaughlin were finalists in the “Sheriff’s Individual” category for the same population count.

• Local residents recognized on Southern New Hampshire University’s President’s List

  Two local residents were named to the President’s List at Southern New Hampshire University for the Summer 2026 semester. Sherrie Robinson of New Kent and Marte Jones of Providence Forge were recognized for their academic excellence. To be named to the list, a student must earn a grade-point average of 3.7 or higher while taking at least 12 credits.

• Cannon named to Dean’s List at Southern New Hampshire University

  Ryan Cannon, a resident of Providence Forge, has been named to the Dean’s List at Southern New Hampshire University for the Summer 2026 semester. To be recognized for the accolade, a student must earn a grade-point average of 3.5 or higher while enrolled full-time.

• Colonial Downs announces record breaking season

  Colonial Downs Racetrack in New Kent has announced historical records following the 2026 live season. Among records achieved by Colonial Downs include the number of live race days (48), 328 races, 3,350 horses in competition, $29 million in prize money, $122 million into total wagers, and 10,000 fans at the Virginia Derby. “The growth and prominence of Virginia’s live racing program is great news for Virginia racing fans, our economy and the Commonwealth’s statewide equine industry,” said Senior Director of Operations at Colonial Downs Frank Hopf in a press release. “We are so proud to be part of Virginia’s racing…

• Charles City’s spark fades as lightning delay, Northumberland thwarts momentum

  

  Charles City High School’s offense struck fast as lightning as they faced off against the visiting Northumberland Indians Friday night. But a lightning delay forced a continuation of the contest into Monday evening, resulting is the Panthers’ spark fading fast. Charles City fell to the visiting Northumberland Indians 41-6 in the non-district affair that covered a two-day span. On Friday night, the Indians took their opening drive down the field, with Lyndon Williams’ 10-yard run assisting the visitors in earning a 7-0 lead. • Maidens man gets year in jail for driving while intoxicated in New Kent

  A Maidens man will spend a year in jail for driving while intoxicated in New Kent County. Christopher Tyrone Carroll, 56, of the 2500 block of Fairground Road, entered guilty pleas to an amended charge of misdemeanor DWI-second offense (originally DWI-third offense), misdemeanor driving revoked (DWI related), misdemeanor driving suspended, and misdemeanor driving without an ignition interlock as part of Monday afternoon proceedings in New Kent Circuit Court.
