Train derails in New Kent, Charles City border

An investigation is underway after a train derailed in New Kent County near the Charles City border on Saturday afternoon. In a press release, around 3:10 p.m. on Oct. 25, approximately 53 coal cars and two locomotives derailed between Roxbury Road in Charles City County and Mountcastle Road in New Kent. Photos show coal from the trains spilled into the wetlands, as well as rails bent and shredded. No injuries were reported as a result of the accident.   • New Kent Department of Social Services advise residents of SNAP benefits delay

    Due to the federal government shutdown, New Kent County residents who receive SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) benefits may be delayed or not issued for the month of November. The Oct. 1 shutdown has halted federal funding to the SNAP program, meaning states cannot guarantee when or if November benefits will be issued. October benefits were approved before the shutdown and will be sent as scheduled. New Kent County residences are advised to stretch their benefits, focusing on essential, nonperishable foods.     Braving the cooler air and taking on the visiting Lakeland Lady Cavaliers, the Oct. 23 Senior Night contest looked to be one for the New Kent Lady Trojans to remember.   • New Kent residents place at Virginia State Fair

    A pair of New Kent residents were recognized as winners in a number of categories at the Virginia State Fair. Billy Hott of Lanexa placed first with the best butterbeans at the event and earned a second-place finish in the hay category. Jimmy Talley was selected as the first-place winner with his alfalfa.
