Panthers win home opener in track

Charles City’s Avery Jones, Daron Jones, Cruz Adkins, and Jaelen Williams all contributed as double event winners as Charles City’s boys track and field team won its home opener on March 20.

The Panthers scored 98 points, cruising to an easy victory over second place Sussex Central (69). Washington & Lee (65), Hopewell (37), and Armstrong (2) wound up the scoring on the boys side.

Daron Jones claimed first in triple jump (43’4”) and 300 hurdles (44.47) while Williams doubled in the shot and discus with tosses of 41’3” and 109’3”, respectively. Adkins won the 800 meters in 2:18.36 and Avery Jones claimed the 100 meters in 12.0. Adkins and Avery Jones teamed with Jaelan Cotman and Jaquane Wyatt to take first in the 400 meter relay with a time of 47.04.

Charles City’s Lady Panthers finished in fourth place with 14 points. Armstrong’s girls took first with 103 points followed by Washington & Lee (57) and Sussex Central (55).
