A four-run third inning broke open the game for New Kent’s unbeaten Lady Trojans as the hosts cruised to a 9-1 Bay Rivers District softball victory over Jamestown’s Lady Eagles.
The March 27 outcome raised New Kent’s record to 5-0, keeping the Lady Trojans atop the district standings.
New Kent jumped in front in the bottom of the first. Dani Foster walked with one away before scoring on Peyton Fleming’s double to left. Fleming made it a 2-0 contest, crossing the plate on Brittany LaPrade’s ground out.
Karley Allen doubled off the left field fence to start the New Kent third. Foster singled to put two aboard for Fleming who delivered both with a single.
LaPrade reached on an error before Kristen Saunders’ line drive was knocked down deep in the shortstop hole. Fleming sprinted home, as the defense could not make a play. Saunders then registered the sixth run on Kristin Colegrove’s single.
Colegrove lofted a solo homer over the left field fence in the fifth. Emi Peterson then doubled and scored on Alura Evans’ single. The hosts added their final run in the sixth as Paige Simpson reached on an error and scored on a Foster single.
Lady Trojan pitcher Marisa Bush, meanwhile, scattered six hits while striking out three. The Eagles scored their lone run in the seventh to ruin Bush’s shutout bid.
