Girls Softball: New Kent 3 York 1

New Kent’s Lady Trojans stranded eight runners on base, but the three who made it around the diamond proved to be enough as the hosts topped York’s Falcons 3-1 in Bay Rivers District softball.

The May 3 win solidified New Kent’s grasp on second place in the district. The Lady Trojans are 13-2 (14-2 overall) and lurking one game behind frontrunner Smithfield. New Kent entertains the Packers, seeking to get a share of first place at home this Friday (May 10).

“Leaving runners on base does bother me,” said Lady Trojan coach Nicole O’Bier. “We left eight, and that’s a lot.

“And we could cut down on the errors, too,” she added, pointing to a pair of miscues in the third inning that led to York’s lone run.

“But we are running the bases very well and getting a lot better at that,” she said.

After Marisa Bush drew a one-out walk in the New Kent second, Kristin Colegrove, who went three-for-three, followed with a double to right field, moving Bush to third. Bush tagged up and scored on Madison Beasley’s line drive that was caught in center.

Colegrove singled to lead off the hosts’ fourth. Courtesy runner Alura Evans took over on the base paths, working her way to third and scoring the go-ahead run on Paige Simpson’s ground out.

Colegrove also came through in the fifth, bouncing a single up the middle to drive in Brittany LaPrade (single) for the final run.

Bush, meanwhile, pitched out of jams with Falcon runners in scoring position in both the fifth and sixth. She scattered three hits while striking out three and walking three.
