Behind a dominating offense, New Kent’s Lady Trojans scored seven first half goals on the way to an 8-0 conquest of Southampton’s visiting Indians and a guarantee of a winning season.

The Oct. 23 outcome upped New Kent’s record to 9-7 and capped a successful Senior Night celebration.

“I’m happy how we came out after a tough loss last night [at Warhill],” said Lady Trojan coach Matt Duckworth. “With all the emotion of Senior Night, you never know how things will come out.”

But New Kent’s attack didn’t miss a beat as the Lady Trojans put an exclamation point on the school’s first winning regular season since 2009.

Less than six minutes into the contest, the hosts owned a 3-0 lead. Melanie McNew opened the scoring followed by shots from Liz Heath and Taylor Williams. McNew added her second goal at the 20-minute mark followed 30 seconds later by the first of Taylor Bland’s two goals.

Bland scored off a Heath pass with 10 minutes left in the half for a 6-0 lead. Then Rachel Moresi, a defensive specialist given an opportunity at the other end, punched in a shot off another Heath assist to create the 7-0 halftime bulge. Williams registered her second goal after the break to complete the scoring.

New Kent unleashed 42 shots at the Southampton goal. The Lady Trojan defense, meanwhile, weathered three Indian penalty corners. Southampton got off only two shots for the game.
