Second Sarah Gupta tourney raises $26,000 for scholarship endowment

The second annual Sarah’s Memorial Golf Tournament held at the Club at Viniterra golf course on Sept. 20 has helped in contributing a $26,000 donation into a scholarship endownment fund with the College of William and Mary.

The tournament, established in memory of Gupta who passed away in Nov. 2011 with a rare form of adrenal cancer, has been held the last two years, with results yielding more than $50,000 in donations. The endownment, on behalf of the former New Kent Middle School teacher, was created to help students pursuing a degree in education or the arts at the College of William and Mary.

Over 120 golfers participated in this year’s tournament, along with 70 hole sponsors, 12 tournament sponsors, and a vast variety of donations and prizes. Food, fun, and friendly competition help propel the event’s success in its short time of existence.

This year’s winning team consisted of Duke Gibbs, Wayne Greer, Robert Hatley, and George Pinelli.

Patrick Evelyn, the organizer of the event, has already begun to form next year’s tournament, with an emphasist to enhance the scholarship and funds.

“We could have never had this spectacular accomplishment without the support and generous donations from so many people and businesses.,” he said. “We sincerely thank them for their participation and look forward to seeing everyone next year.”
