New Kent Lady Trojan coach Ayla Young’s post-game assessment pretty much summed up her team’s performance during an 82-30 thumping administered by Poquoson’s visiting Islanders.
“We had a little bit of a good effort for about one minute, and that was about it,” she said.
The Lady Trojans jumped on top in the Dec. 18 basketball encounter. Anna Mathis scored off the opening tap for a 2-0 lead. But the Islanders’ Sarah Davis answered with a three, and the hosts entered a five-minute scoring drought. By the first quarter’s end, the visitors were in firm control, up 18-3.
“We were not hustling to our man on defense,” Young said. “Defensively, we’ve got to be more aggressive.”
The coach hinted that her team could be somewhat fatigued.
“They say they aren’t tired, but they looked tired to me,” she added.
Mathis led the Lady Trojans (2-5) with 10 points while Brittany LaPrade tossed in nine, including a pair of threes in the second quarter when the hosts managed to get as close as nine. Poquoson led 34-16 at halftime, but opened the third period with a 20-0 run.
Paige Simpson scored four for the hosts while Adrienne Goodlet added three and Kirsten Gipson and Logyn Mills contributed two apiece.
Davis and Sydney Turner pumped in 22 points apiece, combining for eight treys, to lead Poquoson.
