Although a better effort than their previous 12-1 loss against York, New Kent’s boys soccer team absorbed a hard-fought 8-0 loss Thursday against the visiting Tabb Tigers.
“They played defense more organized tonight and played as a team more than at York,” said New Kent coach Clinton Leckie concerning his team.
In the beginning of the game, the Trojans managed to hold the Tigers scoreless, until a floater over New Kent’s goaltender Richard Flournoy found the net around the 33-minute mark of the first half.
“The first 10 minutes were the best tonight,” said Leckie. “We held them and kept them from scoring.”
Tabb player Theo Grothey earned a hat trick within the first half, which helped create a 5-0 lead in the Tigers’ favor. Tabb took a 6-0 lead over New Kent heading into halftime with 13 shots on goal. Flournoy, however, toughed it out and stopped six shots, with a critical save early in the game near the 28-minute mark.
Commenting on Flournoy, who had 11 saves for the game, Leckie remarked, “He’s a 9th grader, so I’m looking forward to his future years.”
Tabb scored their 8th goal around the 22-minute mark of the second half on a long kick from midfield, leading to the contest ending on the league’s slaughter rule at the 20-minute mark. The Tigers took 23 shots on goal for the game, while the Trojans only managed four.
The 1-5 Trojans look to rebound at Smithfield on Tuesday, April 29.
