Taking advantage of corner situations, Bruton’s Panthers dominated in Wednesday’s field hockey match with New Kent’s Lady Trojans, never allowing the hosts to get off a shot in gaining a 6-0 win.

The Panthers benefited from 21 corners, scoring four goals. New Kent, meanwhile, got only one corner opportunity.

“We didn’t really win the transition game,” said New Kent head coach Matt Duckworth after his team fell to 7-7. “They beat us to so many 50-50 balls and that didn’t give us a chance to put pressure on them.”

The Panthers jumped on top early and added two more scores off corners to take a 3-0 halftime lead. On the plus side for New Kent, the visitors came up empty on a pair of first half penalty shots thanks to goalkeeper Megan Bland.

“I’m really proud of Megan for stopping their two penalty shots,” Duckworth said.

“We have improved,” the coach said. “I saw some good things our there tonight.”
